Hi all, Am new to the forum but have been an ST fan for a year or so and am one of the Alphas for ST2 (hurray for like minded gamers ) Ive had a quick look on here for some answers to questions I have without spoiling too much (I like to learn for myself, half of the reason i like the style of st, 'peel that onion'!). Anyway, something I -do- want to be told about is stealth- is it useful, who is it useful to and for doing what etc. Is it good for getting you onto hostile planets when you have missions that require you to go to the spice hall for instance? Appreciate any advice on this because I've never really used it but don't want to miss out! Cheers

dallas : stealth is useful to diminish the number of aliens you'll encounter and to "ignore" a lot of encounter. Once you're in battle, Pilot help getting away but before : stealth is the way. Of course I'm far less knowledgeable than the great cat slayernz and the final word would be his or those of the TBs (but they deserved a break ) As a pirate, I uses stealth a lot since it allows me to pick my fight (i.e : when the faction that hates me the most allied why my home faction I don't want to fight their ships).

Oh ! And welcome around here It's nice that you could participate at the alpha phase. It will be my third (Heroes of Steel and ST 4X before that one) and I wait impatiently for this one.

beuns Thanks for the welcome and the advice yes i should think the brothers do deserve a break after the kick starter and worth everything else they do. I keep meaning to play heroes of steel but always get diverted by ST lol. I think i can feel an evening of messing around with stealth coming on

dallas : don't start any game of HoS ! This game will get you hooked in no time ! TB are too good at making games, once you'll start to play you'll have no time for ST

dallas, Stealth has a valid place in the game of ST. Stealth allows you to avoid encounters you don't want - every move you do with your ship has a chance of a random encounter. With higher stealth, your chance of random encounters diminish. Note though that Stealth doesn't stop you from finding things that you want (eg patrols, or when you are hunting for rumors). Note for Surveillance, if you actually have an encounter, it's because you have failed in your surveillance action, rather than had success. For combat, Stealth has a part to play in helping you escape from enemies (retreating at long range). It helps you avoid torpedo fire (but not so much gun fire). What else can Stealth help out with - obviously the encounters when you land will reduce the annoying military ships trying to search you when you come in to land. @starfixer will probably correct a few inaccuracies that I have probably written ... he likes to correct me cos some of what I think I know I don't.

Thanks also slayernz for taking the time to advise. I ended up being a military officer last night to go alien hunting and ran out of credits so then I went on a good old merchant run instead! Might try this stealth malarky more this evening in that case. Surveillance as an action seems like a pretty dangerous/fruitless task then? If you succeed you get records and if you fail you get an immediate rep penalty. Or encounter patrols that might take your records away. I'm aure there's a method but I've not found it yet, or maybe just because I've not invested enough into stealth do you think? So much to try on this game, I only play on demanding and haven't really explored a lot of the careers out yet, especially smuggler (and havent unlocked spy yet, which is ultimately whay this thread was about I guess)

For me, I don't undertake blockades/surveillance until I have got my tactics to at least 15, and pilot to 20. Tactics seem to help out with success, and if you find yourself in an encounter, Pilot is for me, the most important attribute. As you get into the mid-range levels (say 30+), I always recommend you keep pilot at least 200% of your level. Then again, I'm a gunbunny who avoids boarding like the plague. I prefer gunning and then looting after the ship is defeated.
If you have a good level of tactics, you'll find surveillance very lucrative, especially if you get records bonuses for that type of action (check your class bonuses).

Nope, it's not really working lol. Am trying as an independent bounty hunter and by the time I've built up enough steal I've got multiple good faction relations so I don't want to ruin it by surveilling people!

dallas : at first, when I played I used to befriend everyone (I used to play pirate to kill every independents and avoid job against faction) but now I choose 1 faction outside Cadar and Thulun that will be my friend and I kill every Steel Song and the 2 other faction (an old grudge between Cadar and Steel Song got me to this point). To make it short. Trying to be friend with everyone is very difficult and you'll find more room to grow with some enemies. Just my 2 cent anyway

For some reason I figured it was sensible to try to keep everyone happy, but in practice that's very difficult to do. Steel Song Clan always seems to be a good one to pick on, but then again De Valtos arw so corporate that I want to bash the hell out of them (I'm a corporate sell out in real life much ro my self loathing, so don't get much opportunity to 'stick it to the man' haha). Stealth seems to be a lot more valuable than I've given it credit for so I'll probably try some more with that this evening. Star traders always puts me in the mood for watching Dune as well, that may have to be part of the evening!!
