I just tried to play my first game.
I don't understand very basic things -- like how to research things, are all my planets working on the same goal or do I have to set each one's research target separately, etc.
Is this written down someplace and I missed it?

The best thing to do is the tutorial, which I think covers a lot of basically things. It's been a while though, so I don't remember it too well. There's a "library" in-game that explains some basic concepts and the topics expand as you play the game. Otherwise you should watch the video tutorials that fallen has posted on these forums.
Research is done by the empire as a whole. All the Research Points are pooled together to perform research. There should be a research reminder on the events page (! button) or you can access the research page with the flask icon. From there, on the top there are icons for research tree, available techs for research, current research projects, and completed techs. Once something is researched, it becomes available for the whole empire.
