Is there a way to save a game, then recall it and use it again later if, for instance, your captain dies? I know to save a game you exit play, but can you save a duplicate for instance under a different name as a "recovery" backup?

No, that's not a supported feature in our games.

chet, Welcome to the forum! There has been many a discussion on save games, changing difficulty, and permadeath. The long and the short of it is that the game is designed to keep you engaged and on the edge of your seat when you play. If you are a casual player and don't like permadeath, Basic and Normal are perfect - you can take over the galaxy in a shuttle if you want (tried it). However, if you play with no chance of death, even in the higher difficulty levels, you find the game gets a bit boring (Move, Find target, kill target, move. <insert make money here and there>). There are numerous stories of captains who have exceeded hundreds of millions of credits, have all of the ships they can hold, and are pretty much unstoppable in the game. When you get to that point, it's really time to play a harder difficulty For me, save games in ST would be when you play a game that has god mode cheat codes. You enable it, play (and typically finish the game), but by then the game has become so "ho hum" that you get bored of it and never play it again. That's what I think ST is trying to prevent - accidental boredom from becoming too easy. Don't worry though - my expectation is that in ST2, there WILL be a way to have custom difficulties, where you can disable permadeath. It won't necessarily stop the save-game thing, but there have to be consequences and again, it's kind of the point
