Oh bugger though - being reincarnated as a Steel Song captain would just be the worst. First of all, you have absolutely nothing worth being proud of - planets in the butt-ends of the quadrant, with no real importance in the world of factional politics. i do like some of there prices and planets especially the ones in the butt-ends of the quadrant

maytag Thank you for that, sounds like potentially the best way to do it! I've been playing cyber knights the last few weeks, need to get back to ST soon!

Slow and steady is the way to do it. Can't really rush it or elsw you might make a mistake. I usually go for spying and sell the records to and indie planet if it's the last faction I need to go negative.

Oh, C'mon people! Steel is actually the BEST for achieving Independent Captain - IF you use the map right. I almost got this on crazy this weekend, and the strategy works pretty well. You just have to remember a few things: 1) Start off as a Star Trader. Your balance gives you an edge over the other captains. You will initially want to go to the training room just a few times - take your initial XP to build up on Warrior and Pilot. After that.... 2) Stay OUT of the training room. Don't go in there. Don't rise beyond level 1. It keeps the opposition you'll face to a minimum. Besides, it will keep the distance length of your contracts short. You want that. 3) Work your way to the far southwest quadrant. You want to hang out around Panteria - use that as your home base. You'll get lots of short missions to Caldera (independent, too!) and Corelloth makes a nice second base if there are problems on Panteria. The furthest you want to travel once you're in this base is Opix IV and Steelcrank. Don't plan on going any further. 4) Accept as many missions as you can from Panteria. Use these to build up some wealth and to get a few short promotions. You don't have to accept more than a few, but it is useful for keeping costs down in the Exchange and in the Doctors' office. 5) As soon as you can take over a better ship than your starter, do so! You want cargo capacity at the higher difficulty levels, otherwise, you want a speedy, agile beast. That also means reserving a certain amount of cargo capacity for weapons. 6) You start off as a Star Trader, but you act like a Pirate. That, plus the inevitable trading bans against the Steel Song, will get the lovely wanted flags flying quickly. 7) Once everyone else is mad, turn by blockading. Your new base is Caldera. You should have enough $$$ to go pick on Panteria, and then go home. It may take a little while, but you'll get there. Once you do.... 8) Go to the Hall of Records, and enjoy your shiny new badge!
Is it true what they say about Drewacious the Wide and that Jyeeta Xeno captive? Gross!!

There's a lot of cunning strategy in there for your first post. Welcome to the forum ffeineandsugar. And yes, forget what the posers say about Steel Song. They just don't like them because they lose too many captains to them. The Song is the way to go. How Chowdar ever came to be everybody's favorite will always remain a mystery to me. How have people not figured out that torps are the most useless thing in ST? Unless of course you're fighting Drewacious the Wide.

I have always wondered. Is there a codeword for bonus xp for independents the way you get bonus xp if you r a faction and you type the faction name for your character?

No - you're just a cookie crumb, trying to get through the glass of cold milk that is your quadrant without disintegrating on the way. As you probably know - you can't start as an independent, and you can't denounce your birth-faction, irrespective of how much you've tormented them with torps and guns. It's the same reason why your country can't take away a person's citizenship, no matter how despicable they are. THe best they can do is cancel their passports, but that just prevents travel to other sovereign nations.
