A member of our Facebook page posted some details about how he names his characters to keep them straight.
Do you use a system like this?
Captain Cain said:
Captain - Independent - Malcom Reynolds. Smuggler - Javat - Remy LeBeau Military Officer - Cadar - Steve Rodgers Pirate - Cadar - Jack Sparrow Star Trader - De Valtos - Hans Solo Merchant - Thulun - Maximillion Explorer - De Valtos - Jean Luc Picard Bounty Hunter - Rychart - Dogg Spy - Rychart - Mata Hari Zealot - Independent - Marsuvees Black

I generally try to think up something that sounds cool on the fly. If the captain turns out to be successful, then I better like it. I recently began a Steel Song smuggler, and named him Sithian Belay. He's not likely to die for awhile, but I didn't know that. I have put lots of thought into names, and when they die it's like...damn. I'm for the quick and dirty roll.

Most times I just go with ntsheep. For Military Officers I name them Cpl Hicks, pirates are either Yellowbeard or Jack Sparrow. Explorers I name Dallas. Merchants I call Vinny. It all depends on my mood.

Funny. When I make pirates I will sometimes reference the borderlands 2 enemy no beard.

I used to name the captain after the difficulty then an alphabetical name ... like Crazy Adam Crazy Bruce Crazy Conrad Crazy Dave Etc But more recently I've been killing off less captains due to stupidity so instead I just name them after the profession they are in so I can easily pick the right captain for the game I want to play at the time.
Although my captain is named 'merc' or 'pirate' they always refer to themselves with more real names. My merc is actually called Peter, and my pirate is named Thaddeus Bartholomew Thulun the fifth.

I have no particular system. I name them as I go. I've had to abandon/delete many games across many of TB games as I forget where I left off and have to start over. Because I have games across many of them, I'm going to have to start a small notebook with notes to keep track of each game and the strategies I'll be using.

I use a name that gives clues to the profession and factional alignments. Although since the ability to be independent came along I am an indy "brownshirt" all the way. Eg: Indy explorer = Magellan Brownless Indy spy = Snowden Brownstone Indy MO = Spruance Brownlow Indy merchant = Fedex Brownlet Indy captain = Skipper Brownwyn (captain class is always skipper) Etc I try and think of new ones each time which is a game in itself really. Likewise my ships will always be named by proffession.

My HTC has trace typing, so I just squiggle for a few seconds then I look at the options they give me. But no rhyme or reason for how I name my captains.
Favorites so far have been Jimmy Slower Shatter, a Zealot for Cadar, and Breadsticks Nanosecond, a pirate for Cadar as well.

Skipper? Bread sticks? You guys keep this up, and Cory is gonna take away our naming option.

I usually use the same name for each Faction, and then put numerals after it
Vega Thulun XXVII Vincent Cadar CXII Lion Javat VII

Skipper? Bread sticks? You guys keep this up, and Cory is gonna take away our naming option. I named my Hunder Sweetums with Hund Peaches, a ST ship Incoming Bogey and a captain Screwed. That's not counting the names I've had in non-TB games, like warrior Peanut Butter, recurring hero of Shin Megami Tensei and Devil Survivors. But thanks to you, I will be worse from now on.
