Alien hunting is vary dangerous if you don't have the right ship.there are many different ways to hunt aliens each with pros and cons. If anyone knows a good ship and/or strategy to fight aliens please post it here.

You want Fast/Fast with high armor. Cargo should be filled with Weapons or Artifacts, depending on your Officer mix.
The fastest way to die to Xeno is by Engine destruction, so you want as many spare Engines as possible.
I usually pack an Escape Shuttle when I am hunting Xeno as well.

Don't forget that the probability of encountering Aliens is directly proportional to the difficulty level you are playing. So if you play on Normal, you're significantly less likely to be skewered by an Alien than if you were on Insane.

Doooooon't go alien hunting until you are ready. It'd be like going out and trying to snag Jaws with your little string line and an inflatable row boat.

Best custom made ship: Hull 36 Armor 25 Sails 51 Engines 51 Crew 160 Cargo 160 Guns 45 Torps 26
Best already-made ship: carnifex cruiser
best upgrade/officer combo for finding and killing aliens: upgrades: battle prow, artifact isolation chamber, battleship architecture, null void generator, hyperion superstructure/titan gun batteries/cargo pod (hyperion best for damage reduction vs ram and gun, cargo pod best for increasing weapons which increase damage and board success, titan batteries provide board and gun bonus) officers: veteran, templar, bodyguard skills: 200% lv or more warrior and strength, 130%+ pilot, 70% tactics (minimum 12) cargo: 25 artifacts, 50+ weapons emphassis: patrolling dead planets, board vs aliens
best upgrade/officer combo for combat vs aliens only: upgrades: battle prow, artifact iso chamber/weapon compartment/crew xeno suits (iso chamber best for board success with veteran, cabinet best for damage, xeno suits best for reducing damage), battleship architecture, titan components, hyperion/catgo pod/titan batteries officers: military, templar, veteran/pilot (veteran best for combat and board vs aliens specifically with artifacts and iso chamber, pilot best for avoiding enemy ram, including non aliens) skills: 230% lv or more warrior and strength, 130%+ pilot, 12+ tactics, emphasis: board vs aliens
You might also want to consider getting an escape shuttle when playing on impossible difficulty, and getting a pilot officer as being rammed becomes incredibly dangerous. You're not unto that difficulty yet, but its only a matter of time. There is also spare XP to invest in more skills based on the guidelines described above. More warrior is better for being more successful at boarding xenos and winning, except when being rammed. Pilot is needed for board vs ram, when the enemy tries ramming while you try boarding, in order to avoid the ram. Intimidate decreases wc during red sectors, which is kinda important for patrolling dead planets as most are in red sectors. A small intimidate (9+) is also critical for moving in space without water-fuel. You'll need more pilot and intimidate with the carnifex because there are more crew and hence more wc consumption, and because carnifex has smaller hold.
Hope that helps!
