Lol, me again...
Was thinking about 4X last night, and started daydreaming about a cool map idea...
Instead of a sparse amount of systems spread out over a larger area for a starting location, I thought it would be awesome if instead of in a corner or on the side, have the ships start in the middle of a dense, rich group of systems in the center of the map. Have maybe two or three small groups of systems close by to the cluster to serve as advanced forward locations. Have the Xeno surrounding the group of planets, so that you fight a war on all fronts... This would be great, because all the planets you start with would be great, high rolling planets, so economy and ship deployment would be efficient and easier to manage.
Anyone else have any cool ideas?

Can there be odd-shaped maps? It would be cool to have a nap where everything takes place on the end of a nebula's arm, kind of a conical shape, or if there was a large area of the map on the inside that was unplayable, like a circular ring. Does the engine support oddly shaped maps like this, or does it need to be rectangular/square?

Wait, does this mean we could create and submit maps for possible inclusion or distribution ? Is there any particular file format needed? (I know that c++ is used, and the language has no problems with any particular media file aside from ogm) I think having a submission thing would be nice, however limit it to like one day a week or something. Because some of us might go a little crazy and end up submitting or designing dozens more maps and this could overload and possibly overwork the staff. ;> En1gmaI do not see much of an issue in the layout process or drawing from what i can figure out of the design code. It should be possible to make odd shaped maps, aslong as they are angular in design. It also wouldnt be very difficult to forcibly make a cone inside a square or rectangular map seeing as asteroid fields and anomolies can be placed to form a funnel shaped area. As for a big ol map with unusable space in the center... again same concept, it can blockaded off using asteroids or even marked off by applying edges to the inside area itself. It wouldnt be exactly circular, more of a rhombazoid or octagonal type of shapes. It takes a good bit for a c++ rendering engine to add pure circles to what is a square based quadrant setup. While it can be done, it could be more effort than it is worth to implement.

vylox- Lol I don't think it would need to be a pure circle, but an approximation of one would be awesome I just have way too much time on my hands and I play TB Games more than I probably should, so I'm always thinking about this kind of thing...

Another idea for a map- maybe one for competition? I'm playing a game on the 32x32 30 world map. I really like the system layout of the bottom half of the map- couldn't help but think that a medium/large sized map with one of these dome shaped areas on each of the sides could make for a killer defensive battle. Have a set of 5-6 planets in the center (on the edge of the map), then around that have a dome of sets of two or even three systems around them. I was just picturing a large battle on two or three sides with a constantly shifting battle front, and I think it could make for a fun time.

They should rename the garden map "En1gma map", because all of your ideas have been or will be incorporated into that map En1gma.

Vylox, I've detailed my favorite map (the degla three xeno extreme) in excel spreadsheet. One square per square. Can even use co!ors for the worlds and asteroids ice fields etc.
