I find that with many of the Awards, especially the earlier ones, once I've unlocked them I rarely ever try again since what's the point? What might be nice is adding unlocks or some other rewards on a per character basis in addition to the permanent ones. For example, "Because of your rapid rise in ranks, officers are eager to sign-up with you. For the honour of working with such a rising star, they are even willing to take only half their normal share."
This might also help solve the problem of what to make for the Retirement award.

I tried to get support for captain specific unlocks, noone else eeems interested though.

It is all a question of priority. We set the priorities of our patches, work and development based on player feedback. So I think what sebastian is saying is that when it was discussed previously, there was more excitement for new general Awards than a Character specific kind. I think your post here is about something else -- it's like a special Award that is only granted when you Award with the current character. The game does track it and it's totally doable. Post some ideas you think we could implement without re-writing the game and I'll prioritize the heck out of them =)

I support some of the best equipment, or special officer awards were linked to the current character. This would need to be done carefully and not work for awards that sort of cut you out of other awards for equipment you want to combine. The advantages are it could add a bit more to the unique character progression, and also make the game a bit more difficult. Looking at all the equipment I have unlocked now, since cash is usually not a problem mid game, it has made the game substantially easier, right after my skills have improved from doing the unlocks. Another option maybe would be to link equipment/officers to a miniumum skill perhaps?
As for implementation, there seem to be more awards and ideas than rewards already ingame. Could there be an easy limitation, say for Crazy and above, additional smaller awards required for each captain to claim the reward? It may only work if these extra awards were not time limited to the first x years or anything so they could be done any time you wanted to earn the equipment.
Going further would it work to have the award itself, generate the upgrade availability at the next planet you visit, or just appear on the ship? Not sure what can be done easiest without re-writing game.

For starters, Perhaps to avoid confusion between Awards & "character awards", Character Awards could be renamed to something like "Perks", or "Earned Abilities" ?
I don't think they should unlock ship upgrades but provide bonuses to that captain alone due to them doing it a lot and getting better at it.
Maybe stuff like -
"x" amount of stopping a hostile boarding action - increases proficiency at repelling boarding attempts.
& another similar but with initiating boarding's and winning "x" conflicts that way, increases proficiency in boarding actions.
or you've lost "x" amount of crew in exploration/harvest attempts - they are finally listening to the captains expertise and die less often.
I suppose another way to go is to have them more like Perks in the Fallout games where every "x" amount of levels, you get to choose another special ability maybe from another class type.
Anyway just some random thoughts off the top of my head, but I think the first part about calling them something other than awards is important though - should it be implemented.
