Every member can use Karma Points on the Forum. Some of you are doing it on a regular basis (about 50 members) but I think we will see more value if we get more participation.
If you see a Post that you really like, use the 'Exalt' button to add a +1 Karma Point for the author.
If you see a Post that you do not like, use the 'Smite' button to add a -1 Karma Point for the author.
You can do this to anyone -- even me, and it's totally anonymous. You cannot Karma yourself, however. =)
Think of Karma points as the XP and Posts as the Turns.
The more people who use the Karma system the more valuable the results will be.
Thanks for helping us keep the moderation workload as low as possible by participating in this group moderation.

I have to admit that I do not like the system. Not because I got -5 karma so far ;D. But I do not see even remote usefulness of the system. It does not give any value to me, as I do not know if it is one post which 5 people did not like, or just one guy not liking me at all. When my karma score is not useful to me, I do not see how it can be useful to other people.
If we can see the score of the post next to it, that would be another story.
So in the meantime, I have to say I like my reputation as wile rebel and pirate, so keep it up people! Hit the smite button next to my posts as often as you can. Please! I have to keep my reputation! Thanks.

I use it to assign weights to the responses in posts and as a general measure of how the forum population is responding.
One thing that I really like about Karma is that it is often used by people who don't post. We have hundreds of forum readers and lurkers who can Exalt good posters even if they never post anything.
While I don't understand why you do not like it, I respect your opinion and hope that your future posts bring you positive feedback and many Exalts.
Edit: I use it by taking (Karma / Posts) to generate a floating point value.

Would really prefer karma to be per post rather than per user, or some way of elevating particular responses to posts.
No point in saying that here I guess as it is one of the limitations in proboards we are stuck with. Unless maybe they notice enough of these posts.

I have nothing against the idea of liking or disliking someone...
The only thing I do not find fair is the fact that we can "exalt" or "smite" one person several times. I think once is enough.

Hey Raven,
I partly agree with you because it's all to easy to continually push a person up (or down) in the Karma ratings. However, if the person continually posts really good information that helps you in your gameplay (or any other aspect of your life for that matter) ... being able to Exalt the post rather than the person is very valuable.
For example, you could write a fantastic post about successful Piracy techniques. Next you could write an awesome response to a post about how rumors work. It's important that you should be able to be recognized for both of your messages.

slayernz : You are right with that, it can be fair to exalt or smite a person several times, if that person keeps posting very interesting (or useless) messages. It only depends on us : if we keep the system like it is, all we have to do is taking the use of the karma button a bit seriously. And maybe not caring too much about it...

If I help somebody while they are on Solar War with someone, do I risk getting smited?\
I might need to hire a political officer.

Haha, no one will EVER be banned. If you get to -181 Karma you'll still be welcome here.
It is just a way to say "Thanks for the awesome post" or "that was a mean thing to say."
We have banned one user so far. The posted advertisements and chain letters. =)
