I thought Vincent had gotten superpowers, when he started critting for 300+ points! But no, the Volpa levels are really low. My party is all at level 28, playing Brutal, and the Volpa are level 26.

Volpas just have very little armor and resistances. This doesn't change much in terms of levels.

Somewhat related to this thread: why are there min/max levels for areas anyway? I can understand the point of min (I think): prevent parties from entering areas earlier than they should. What is the benefit of having max levels, though?

At the same rate you could ask about benefits of leveling itself. Max level is there to prevent endless boring grind on the edge of failure.

What is the benefit of having max levels, though? Min and max level allow for controlled scaling within areas, creating areas that are harder than others, areas that are easier than others, areas that never get easier, areas that get easy later, etc. For Heroes, they've been a critical part of the entire game's balance -- but I can imagine why this fact isn't highly apparent outside of our small author's circle of 2.

I would think that another reason for max levels would be gear. Gear is a fixed quantity for a particular region/time. Sure you're levels are going up with enemies, but your gear is not changing and gear is huge. So if the enemy levels could go up infinitely in a given area you would probably find that you would become less and less effective against them. Depending on what order you go through the game there are often some points where you desperately need to upgrade your weapons and when you do, the team suddenly starts shining again. This is particularly evident on Nighmare difficulty.
