hlo - I thought we were talking about growing together. Rollback does not sound like growing I didn't say you have to. We just need to get some new transport designs that we can grow from. See my other new thread in the sub forum.

hlo - yep, thanks for the post. Will keep working on improving. Check out Heavy Transport and other posts on the forum, people are sharing some great designs.

This is a super-timely discussion. As a new player (well, coming back from a few years of insane absence), still on the intro Easy scenario, I just started invasion and came up with Exactly the concerns that prompted this thread.
The first thing I realize is that the default transport doesn't have invasion capability. OK, so I need to design my own ship. Yay. I knew from reading other threads here that I was going to get my butt kicked. So I make it heavy on defense and invasion ability, no weapons and everything else light as possible.
After the first butt kicking I'm like: - Duh OK, let's go somewhere and repair. - Hey, I guess my Starport 4 will do that. Nope. - Uh, maybe I can create a carrier that repairs something other than fighters. Nope. - Dang, check all of the related tech advancements. Wow, no repair!?! - I know, I'll check the forum!
So it seems after that process I come here and peeps are confirming that unless you have patience for 50+ turns between invasion for a vessel, these ships need to accept a one-way mission.
So here's my vote to support the things I looked for above. If we're looking for any kind of realism in this game there needs to be repair capabilities on-board, with repair vessels, and in-dock. If nothing else, think about all of those Star Trek exchanges between the bridge and Engineering: "Scotty, I need warp speed now" ... we have no chief engineer, no Jeffries tubes to crawl into, no citizens aspiring to be engineers (cuz that's an aspiration to suicide...).
Maybe the concept of a transport ship for invasion needs revision. We're transporting pods of "something" that will invade a planet - it's nothing but a payload of death. If this were truly a one-way mission, I'd think the whole process would be mechanized, with drones that we expect to be destroyed, no crew, and no human ground troops. If that fundamental approach were revised then we wouldn't need to worry about repairs, fuel, or anything else discussed here. And the transport as it is now could serve purely to deliver final cleanup troops plus maybe a small base - not quite a colony. HTH
Thanks for the personal touch, guys.

Captain Starbuck -- Transport Ships are definitely going to the invasion system forever in ST 4X! That decision was made during the ST 4X alpha and it is here to stay.
You DO get a default transport ship that has invasion capabilities -- no idea where you heard otherwise. It is called Military Transport. Sorry you missed that, I'm sure that confusion didn't help.
Take a look at the Tutorial and the Help file. Also when looking at the Tech Tree, keep in mind that the icons are significant and you can get the best research paths by noting that.

Thanks Cory, I'm more familiar with the ships now - and have since designed my own series of three invasion vessels based on whether they're going to be a swarm of fodder, or if I intend to keep them around a while.
I dunno if this has been suggested recently, sorry: What about adding some factor of real-time to ship repair time, like one point per 1, 2, 3, or 4 hours? Maybe that can even be in the tech tree. That coupled with other ideas will provide a number of options for each individual.
And...maybe I missed this too, but what about improving repair time based on experience. So a ship that's survived 10 invasions will repair faster than a new one.
Thanks for the healthy discussion.
