Putting a party in line or in a plus simply to get coverage of spell could use a tweak.
1. The wizards shield buff and others like it aught to be able to be cast on an empty square between the characters to get their effect otherwise APps are wasted setting everyone up.
2 at lower levels allow AOE caster to choose between X and + and L shapes.

I'd take a permanent X over the + all day long. It appears to be the default pathing of mobs here and in TBf to end up on diagonal if they aren't swarming the front, so a X AoE would be vastly more useful.
As for the party, just autobuff to handle most fights and refresh critical buffs as the old one is expiring, even if you lose a couple of turns to do so. I can almost always configure a + in mobile fights and for static ones the guy(s) in the back probably don't need it so badly.

Thanks for the feedback, perhaps something we'll be able to include in our next game.

Probably too complex but the buffs could simply effect the party without needing to much conform to any shape?

chesspupil you can do that out of combat with auto buff. However for in combat shape and number of targets are things tale efdect. Usually higher lvl buffs go from cross to block as one of the benefits of increasing the talent.

Def suggest using AutoBuff.
In combat, placement matters.
