Mine is all of the above, starting with CYOA books, through AD&D, into the 64, Sega, PS, and PC. Now, more happy than ever in app RPGs with TB!
Does anyone recall a six sided dice RPG called (I'm almost sure) Star Traders? It was really bare bones, no modules I ever saw, just a small box set with a couple manuals and some dice. Black with red and white lettering, if my childhood memory is right.

I played a lot of D&D/AD&D in the late 1970s into the early '80s. During that time, I also played a bit of Zork and Hamurabi--an early economic simulation game and an antededent to city building games.I played few RPGs for the next 20 years--a bit of Zelda in the late 80's, some SimCity in the 90's. I had other interests and didn't own computer games most of that time, so play was sporadic. At some point in the early 2000s my older son got a Gameboy Advance, this ushered in a new era of RPG playing for me. Strictly to have something to talk to the boy about you understand. ;-) I started with Pokemon, then Fire Emblem, then others. Later we got an X-box and then an X-box 360 where i've played many games at least a bit. The most memorable ones i've finished are Civilization Revolution, Fable, Mass Effect, Bioshock and, my favorites, Fallout 3 and Skyrim. My sons got me the most recent Xcom for Xmass, but i haven't had time lately. i got my first tablet--a Kindle Fire--in 2013, which led to my current focus on Android games (currently on a Nexus 5X). I started with Star Traders and joined this community in 2013, moving on to a bit of Age of Pirate, a lot of HoS and ST4X and a bit of TB. My other favorite Android RPGs out of the many I've tried are Pixel Dungeon, This War of Mine, and Game Dev Story. Currently, i don't have time to spend on games that require a large commitment, so as much as super deep Steam and PC games look appealing to me, they are off my list. For similar reasons I'm not into MMORPGs or other games that require connecting with other players online. I need games that I can play when its convenient for me.

I'm an old gamer. Original Gamer you might even say. I've played a lot so far and plan to keep on playing. All of the above is my answer.

Chainmail/basic D&D was my introduction to RPGs in the mid 70s. Have lost track of all the pen and paper RPGs I've played. Also did a number of PBMs and usenet games based off pen and paper ones back in the early 90s. A number of computer and console RPGs (original Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy Tactics are still favorites of mine.) Basically all the above, but it was friends of my older brothers that got me started with the earliest versions of D&D.

Thanks... ... capthawk for starting this thread. ... En1gma for reminding me of skyrim, how could i forget skyrim?!?!? I've updated my post to include it and the second half of my RPG history. AA , or anyone else for that matter, have you tried KOTOR on a mobile device. I played a little of that back in the day and would like to give it a go. But, I wonder if I'll be able to read the screens easily on my 5" screen--I tried Baldurs Gate a while ago, and the text was just too small for me to enjoy the game. I also wonder if that is the sort of game one can pick up and put down. I seem to recall enjoying KOTOR until I got stuck somewhere and could NOT figure out how to get out. Curses on xdesperado for taking the coveted title of longest playing RPG'er. :-)

I believe the first RPGs I've played were flash based free-to-play browser games by Artix Entertainment, then I went to KOTOR (1&2), and I haven't found any new RPGs since then that I thought were good until I discovered STRPG. Sometime later I played Dark Souls, and, most recently, Dark Souls 2.
PlayStation is an option in the poll, but not Xbox...

tenbsmith think it was 1975 or 76 when I first started. Was a tag along with my much older brother and his best friend had really gotten into the game. Despite age difference playing with them helped make me feel more grown up and since by that point all my brothers had all moved away from home, gave me a chance to spend time with them. His friend gave me my very first D&D rulebook after like the second time I played with them and I was totally hooked after that devouring anything I could get related to D&D and then other RPGs. The Stars Without Number game we've started here on forum sort of takes me back to those days with its very thin rule set that leaves much to the players and gamemaster to flesh out themselves. Over the years having played so many games I've found that often the smallest least detailed ones can be the most fun as they force everyone to use their imagination which is what RPGs are about at least for me.

Over the years having played so many games I've found that often the smallest least detailed ones can be the most fun as they force everyone to use their imagination which is what RPGs are about at least for me. Which is how you end up with a wild survivor man that makes high explosives out of soap just to catch himself a rat dinner.

Although very complicated with rules and details, it had that element of free-form creativity. Mixed classes, races, etc. Then the ability to make your own modules was fun, I bought plenty (modified most, lol) but the ones I or friends created from scratch were inevitably the best. I liked the way D&D was structured, some rules were or could be optional. I think that's what appeals about TB difficulty selection; gives you the option to minimize/eliminate the more difficult rules if you want, or go hardcore on the other end of the spectrum.

As for KOTOR, I guess I'll just have to install it now.
