I'm asking this question to inform a paper i'm writing about cancer survivors using a specific cancer survivor social networking site. A lurker only reads, never posts. What do you call someone who posts content. I'd call them a poster, but that's too easy to confuse with something you hang on a wall.

i like contributor. registered users and site members can be lurkers. On the site i'm referencing, there are a lot of registered users who never make one post, but do visit and read. they didn't need to register for that, but they did anyhow. I do think there are many more lurkers who never registered, but we didn't invite them to participate in our survey.

'Paticipating' seems to be the antonym for 'lurking'. And people have a 'participatory presence'. Did you participate in the discussions, or did you just lurk? In some circumstances, they are known as 'content providers'.

participating is pretty good. but i think you could make the argument that people listening to a discussion participated.
I really like content provider as the most exact. I had considered something like that previously, but it seems a bit long and clunky for something I'll have to many times in the paper.

Then you might want to distinguish between producers and consumers of information. The lurkers only consume.

"sigh" now you've all gone and made me self-conscious for being a non-lurking lurker. But no more, I am now a contributor. ...surely this will wreak havoc on those trying to tag me. Edit: ntsheep, you are a forum ninja. You saw it coming and posted before I could! I see now how you can destroy the front end of an SUV and walk away with minor injuries.

Stick a torp in it Edit: contributor, I have many clones on here. The Lab sheeps, a few grunts, if one doesn't see something, another will. WE ARE EVERYWHERE
