Speed: Soldiers and Pistoleers rely on speed.
Strength: Does this help Swordsman strike quicker or do they need quickness?
Which has the best chance of winning initiative in a combat round?
Combat: I use 2 officers + fighters. My officers are carrying the +4 Initiative gear.
Example: Captain with 26 quickness and +4 initiative gear. The enemy gets the first shot much more frequently than I estimated. Bad luck when all 4 can get a shot before a single one of my crew does. I was hoping to fire my Tricky Gun-play stun attack, or bleed poison attacks on the first round.
How can I increase reliable first shot percentage.

Tis a joy to hear from such an esteemed scholar once again. (you been on twitch yet? Tue my first). Every day I boot up ST2 and feel like its the first day, questions leading to "ah ha moments" only leading to deeper research. I learned allot from my last level 32 team. "ST2 Captain: Race to the Bottom" Hey that might make a pretty cool thread title. Whatcha think?

John Robinson I think you are looking at the wrong numbers for the initiative roll. Here are my crew combat notes, they are a summary of a couple of threads that I've plagiarised.... The combat is organized into rounds. At the start of a round everyone rolls Initiative and then everyone goes in order of Initiative. Then, the round ends and new Initiatives are rolled. Initiative is one big dice equal to the average of Wisdom and Quickness (so if had 10 Wisdom, 20 Quickness, would be D15) and then +Initiative bonus you are getting from anywhere (Traits, Talents, Gear). Strength is used for Rifles and Primary Blades Quickness is used for Sniper Rifles and Pistols and Off-hand Blades Armour Piercing and Deflection are on a scale from 1 - 10 in the game. At the moment, there are no Stealth-based Combat Talents on Jobs. If armour has a point of Stealth, then if you can match it with a point of Stealth skill, you get +1 Evasion (strong dice). Additional musing are.... Combat rules are similar in some aspects to Battleforce so I believe the character attribute (Strength or Quickness) will combine with the weapon stat (Strength or Quickness) to provide accuracy. Based on the attribute description there is a possibility that Strength might modify your damage roll and might also act as a damage soak with fortitude. There are combat talents that affect parry and dodge. Since combat capability is 'symmetrical' this implies our fighters should also have dodge / parry stats, though I've yet to confirm / figure this out. Possibly quickness related? Likely supplemented by armour stats. Special damage like bio-poison will probably need special resistance so traits that give resistance to things like this will be important later, especially against Xeno types. Armour has evade and deflection stats. I think the evade supplements your evasion which is the ability to avoid ranged / melee attacks. Deflection is your ability to 'turn away' armour piercing bullets. Anyway, to get to your question, high initiative will increase your first shot percentage so you are looking for (Quickness + Wisdom) / 2 with supporting gear and buffs.

Quickness is used for Rifles and Pistols I think that Quickness is used for the Sniper Rifle, but the other rifles are using Strength.

Quickness is used for Rifles and Pistols I think that Quickness is used for the Sniper Rifle, but the other rifles are using Strength. I agree totally. When you read the talents / weapon stats they are all basically rifles so for my own personal categorisation / notes I just decided to call strength based rifles 'heavy weapons'. I think I would be more precise to say sniper rifles and rifles.

Interesting read. Thanks John Robinson! But damn, that was dense material... hard to digest all at once, having never played BF before. I am curious whether in ST2: 1. Does Tactics and Quickness affect Ranged Defense? 2. Does Tactics affect Critical Hits %? (in ship and crew combat) I've seen crew with bonus Tactics skill points, but always assumed they don't help...

In the live stream Cory Trese is saying that combat in BF is not much like ST2.

bobc : So now you can be as confused as the rest of us. I think the operative word here is 'guide'. The BF and ST2 systems are different but there seems to be some similarities / overlaps that we can use to try and understand what is happening while we wait for fuller explanations to be made available. Thats why I split what I'd learned from the dev's answers in other threads from my own musings. Whichever way you look at it though, it is great fun and I'm glad to be here taking part.
