For consistancy -- the other fighting professions have names that indicate what weapon is used. Also will not conflict with the trait Soldier which could cause confusion.

This seems a solid suggestion.

HYmmm ... my initial reaction is to dislike this idea but the reasoning is sound. I guess my concern is that if we do that and add few more of these jobs we're going to look just like SWG.

This is growing on me.
Does it still let us use existing expansion jobs like "Sniper" and "Assassin" those aren't gear derived.
We need enough variety to have all the planned jobs before release.

Well, the point was that what is currently called 'Soldier' is really a collection of rifle talents. It's not a good job addition for Officer Pistoleers or Swordsmen, looking to expand their combat-oriented talents. On the other hand, it is precisely what Bounty Hunter Officers who want increased rifle talents are looking for, but that isn't obvious either. My expectation would be that Solider would give you a collection of general military skills, usable by any fighter-sort, because, if instead it was a collection of rifle skills, it would be called something like Rifleman ...

Well nothing will be obvious from just the names. Players will read the second line of information as well. I'll talk to fallen when he shows up, I do like the sound of Rifleman.

Although I guess the otherside is that "Rifleman" and even "Swordsman" seem to have implied genders

You could move 'Swordsman' to 'Blade'. 'Rifle Specialist' seems wordy to me. Let me do some more thinking. Though I suspect in a future where women are happy to be called Princes, they won't be unhappy about swordsman or rifleman, either.

True. We just don't have the budget to make job names smart enough to inspect character gender flags before picking. Bladeswoman sounds awesome tho.

Yah, an additional 2 cents
When I was first playing I got visually confused with the screen showing the character graphic (full body); I was seeing the pistol and visually associating it with 'soldier', only to see he/she was a pilot, etc.. I still occasionally get visually confused with it for a second. I think Rifleman (or Rifle-whatever) would help.

What about the graphic? Confused!~

MintDragon - the pistol is the default weapon for crew without heavy combat training.

MintDragon - the pistol is the default weapon for crew without heavy combat training. yes, I know. I was only referring to glancing at the pic, seeing a pistol, and associating it with 'soldier' when I was first playing. no biggie, just sharing how my brain was interpreting it as a new player. thought 'rifleman' could clear up a potential confusion point for newbie players
