For consistancy -- the other fighting professions have names that indicate what weapon is used. Also will not conflict with the trait Soldier which could cause confusion. s/consistancy/consistency sorry, couldn't help myself... Nothing to be sorry about, there, friend.

Nah. Have to make sure the name fits within the world. We'll think about it. For now, definitely Soldier.

Perhaps what we have is what has been historically called 'skirmisher'? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skirmisher (Not the cavalry sort). These days, the term has fallen out of use, as the skirmisher was distinguished from the heavy infantry, and we mostly don't have heavy infantry any more, so all infantry are skirmishers. But if we have _swords_, then, ah, maybe we have skirmishers as well?

I don't think we want to head that route -- it seems far more confusing. First gut reaction to a skirmisher is someone who uses mix of short ranged weapons and melee. Blame Total War if you want

We definitely cannot move the name into a less recognizable place.
At this time, Rifleman seems like the only possible option, but I am not sold. Lots of future jobs are not going to be a weaponized noun (Bodyguard, Assassin, Rogue).

It was not a strong desire for consistency that caused me to reject the term soldier, but rather a dislike for the term soldier that caused me to take a look and come up with an alternative.

I like the idea of changing the job title to rifleman. It helps mark that job as one of the basic combat types each of which is geared to a specific weapon specialty more so than other jobs may or may not be. Three basic categories of weapons, three basic jobs all geared around one of those types. As for the whole gender thing I think the whole "political correctness" thing has about run it's course in our real world and we still have Policemen, Firemen, Riflemen etc. regardless of the gender of said person holding the job. Clarity and making sure people know what a given job is based on a quick glance at the title trumps cute attempts at gender neutrality in my book any day.

As for the whole gender thing I think the whole "political correctness" thing has about run it's course in our real world and we still have Policemen, Firemen, Riflemen etc. Actually, I think you'll find that "police officer" and "firefighter" have now replaced their gendered counterpart in all modern official documents. That said, in ST2, we do have "swordsman," so why not "rifleman"? (There is an equivalent to "pistoleer," actually: "musketeer"! Both are old words, but whereas we still use pistols, muskets have been replaced by ... rifles.)

Rifleer Sounds like somebody who goes through your underwear drawer when you aren't home. Seriously though nothing wrong with it. My op, What do Military officers give commands to? Soldiers Infantryman ? Can rush forward and throw grenades.
