I bought many expensive components from the stardock in the hope that I could protect my people. I'd really like some feedback as to whether or not they are helping.

If the ship component helped it is always printed.
If you'd like to share more details about what unnamed expensive components you bought, I can help. As is, I can guess that you did not buy Defensive Ship components?

Matchweave EVA Suits and L Support Rover
I am thinking about getting Hyperion Exo Suits -- do they stack? with the other suits? with the Rover?
Should I be buying something else?

The cards seem to be rendering terribly.

Matchweave EVA Suits and L Support Rover I am thinking about getting Hyperion Exo Suits -- do they stack? with the other suits? with the Rover? Should I be buying something else? Only 1 Ship Protection component will fire at a time, they don't stack. The game will automatically pick the component that gives highest protection. Each time it is used, you will see a note in the Card Results text, and that component will get damaged slightly. If damaged more than 60%, it will no longer work until you fix it, and the game will use the next highest protection component (if you have more than one that applies). Same thing for Crew Protection components. In your first screenshot, you passed the skill check, so no damage was applied, therefore the component did not kick in. Not sure why it didn't work in the second screenshot. I'm assuming it's not >60% dmg?

In the second screenshot, it was ship damage. You didn't mention buying any ship protection components.

That's all I have bought so far. I will look harder for things I could be buying, as I didn't see any ship things that screamed -- buy me if you are an explorer -- so far.

There are a bunch of Medium size components that will apply.
Also the Large size ExoCrawler

The important thing is to check the bottom of the card. It lists the ship component that applies, if there is one.

Ah, people who aren't all that familiar with the cards need some way to tell 'what should I buy' when at the stardock. But I suppose that will come later.

Yes, there will be filters specifically for these in the Stardock upgrades screens.
