Red boxes denote officers. Maybe Corvo Sixkill had a premonition, since he quit just before we had this battle. (And the original title of this thread was 'Tears for Cory Trese'.)

Thread title confused me. I initially assumed the thread would be about something bad that happened to Cory Trese . It took me a few seconds to realize it was about the tears of players that Cory drinks

That's a lot of bodies! What did you do, feed them to a Xeno?? No. Another accursed scout ship. This one full of Steel Song spies. I may institute a policy of running from the things. Here I am, feared blockading captain, strangler of trade, in my great big Heavy Lifter -- and it's the wretched little scout ships that do me in. I wonder if this is because their crews, being smaller, are better trained or if I just keep rolling 1s and 2s ....

Well, I wonder if it's your ship. The Heavy Lifter is a smuggler/merchant ship by name. I wonder if there are invisible stats lowering it's chances against fighting ships?

For a merchant ship, it could certainly stand to have a larger starting cargo capacity. What I like about the thing is that you can swap out one of your barracks 2 for a barracks 4, which will hold all the crew. So the second barracks 2 becomes a luxury cabin. 3 range 5 torpedoes seems excessive, so one of them becomes an officer's cabin. Then those 2 range 1 weapons -- you don't intend to use them right away, do you? Good, 2 more passengers cabins. And the diplomacy boat is ready to sail across local quadrants, dispensing judgements and arguing cases wherever that is needed.
It's a nice way to make money early. But having made some, I kicked out the diplomatic service, and added some weapons, and defensive modules, and thought to make a career as a blockader. Seemed to be going well until this happened ...

Yeah, same here. I saw the title and thought Cory was dead or something...
---
The larger the ship, the slower it is, so that puts your at some disadvantage. Not sure if that affects your defense/offense, but for range change it would.
And yeah, when I was on impossible difficulty, the enemy crews tended to be Lv 17-20 while mine were still in the 12-15 range.
Did you have a Mass Dampener or Barracks that got destroyed during combat?

Barracks. And I have changed the title, as I don't want to shock any more people like that ....

Ticket #3617 (new defect) ST2 - Bug - Officer Denote Not Working in CaptainLog
It should be saying "Officer Vala Callavarn" so we can see your sadness without the red boxes.
We are looking at some design changes around death save that may result in some deaths being traded for negative Traits.
