Because farms are large industrialized operations in which the farmers and working staff are generally low paid and need affordable food options.

Ready to eat rations are 83% high fructose corn syrup with whipped animal fat. The rest artificial flavorings.
Large caches can be found in wilderness zones, even xenos won't eat them.
