Awesome, feel like this thread got us to a great place. Looking forward to rounding out the feature set.

Yah, I consider myself a mid-range player and would normally select #2 (and normal difficulty, big ship). I imagine with a smaller ship, more personal experience in the game with certain professions, I'd be ready to step up the challenge and would lean towards #1, especially if I'm trying to specifically min/max certain areas quickly.
The beauty of the game is the amount of layers of complexity that CAN be explored, and manual selection from turn 0 would be something I'd enjoy (and liken to setting up an elaborate game board or picking the perfect RPG character setup). So would vote to keep all 3. Agree that certain players (esp new players) will have enough other things to learn, play, ponder, and WOULD appreciate having the 'table set for them'. Or at least the choice of doing so.

Perhaps an option... Something in the settings side of things for later on. Having each profession have a chosen default-talent. I personally like to make sure I have everything chosen myself off the bat. I want to guide things in very specific ways sometimes depending on skills/talents/etc... But I can see the preferred ease of use of auto-assigned talents. So if you tend to always prefer certain first-talents for most crew, you can pre-set them, so the auto-assign goes off of your preferences?
