Even though it is a good game, and this might be fixed by the time it releases, I have one big problem with ST2: Steel Song doesn't feel like Steel Song.
You see, SSC is constantly getting into petty Trade Bans. One of the reasons I loved SSC in STRPG was that their politics focused on combat-oriented things like Duels of Assassins. Compared to other factions, they rarely got into Trade Embargoes, and when they did it was normally against either Cadar during a Solar War with them that was happening at the same time, or De Valtos (obviously those occasions were DV's fault). Of course it's possible for them to get into any kind of conflict with any faction, but they very, very rarely got into Embargoes with other factions, and even with DV and Cadar their Trade Embargoes weren't too frequent.
Steel Song were good people that solved problems through violence rather than weird slimy trade laws. But now? They seem no different than the other factions now in their regard for Trade Bans.
Trade hardly mattered to Steel Song back in STRPG. Just try to find a decently profitable trade route that involves a Steel Song planet in that game! People only traded with them when there was a shortage, a Trade Alliance with Javat, or when circumstances forbid them from conveniently trade anywhere else, and that was fine. Steel Song should go back to their roots and become the guys mostly just known for stabbing people!

Honestly, this problem is so bad I mostly just play as Moklumnue now, even with combat-oriented captains. Mok works just fine for my combat-oriented captains because the +1 Gov makes it easier to get everyone to full health. Of course Rychart could work too with their +4 Gov, but they are Syndicate scum!

I have noticed that while ST2 greatly improves things for traders, there seems less room for those who feel that trade is somehow shameful or dirty than there was ....

Really? My latest Captain did 100% blockade operations. He traded only to empty his ship of pirated wares I guess ... there's trade for you! resistor - the feedback on Steel Song is well taken, and we'll keep working on improving the variations in the politics engine and Contact goals.

Ah, I haven't tried life as a pure blockader yet. Maybe I should.

Ah, I haven't tried life as a pure blockader yet. Maybe I should. Trading-as-you-go has always been an optimal strategy, even in ST RPG. It continues to be so in ST2. I play lots of Captains who find it a drag and eschew it for focusing on their core abilities. Are you choosing to trade because you desire to take the optimal approach to profits, or because your Captain's can't stay alive in other styles of play? Trying to understand better.

I find the minigames boring, and ship combat not cost effective until you have already spent money on your ship.

All the Trade Embargoes are just excuses to start retaliatory actions when people inevitably start violating them.

Faction specific Conflict systems are not yet in place. I feel that making the factions feel really distinct is incredibly important, especially for new players. I look forward to seeing what you guys have in store for us!
