The talent Backline Leader is supposed to only work in position 4, but twice I saw the enemy use it in position 3, when there were only three enemies left. It could be that Backline Leader works if the character is behind all the others, whether this position is 2, 3, or 4, but that shouldn't work that way, because no other talents seem to work that way. If I have a character who can only fire from position 3 or 4, for instance, then he/she can't fire from position 1 or 2 even if there are only two characters left.
In short, if the position dots mean different things for different talents, that's very confusing.

This is how all Talents work. They compress as crew members die. All Talents work this way, 100% every single talent . If the Talent can only be used in slot 4 and someone dies, then it can only be used in slot 3. If it can be used in Slot 3-4 and someone dies, it can only be used in slot 3. This is to allow Talents to always be useful in some slot. Otherwise, the entire combat scenario would be horribly restrictive and unplayable. I can vouch for that because it was like that in the early alpha.

Hm, OK. It's fine that way, then. I could have sworn my soldier was unable to use Suppressing Fire if he was one of two fighters left, but I've only been playing after I'd gotten too tired to keep working, so my brain was never in its best shape.

If he is in the first slot, that is the case. The compression does not give you the same range just "moved down" it "compresses". 3-4 becomes 3, then 2, then 1 as folks die. Hope that helps!

It does. That's probably how I got mixed up.
