Ignoring Scoreboards and Achievements, am I penalized in any fashion for taking my sweet time to play this game? Is there a finite number of years 'till your captain gets old and retires? Is there a mechanic that makes the game progressively harder the more time passes, regardless of your equipment/level?

Due to the ship's void engine, spacers age very slowly, so essentially the captain/crew won't die of old age. The game has a concept of 'Eras' (such as factions fighting over power in a new Senate, a galaxy-wide plague, or spice crops falling to disease for several years) which impact the game events for a period of time. Finally, the game does get 'harder' over time, but you would presumably be gaining experience, learning new talents, upgrading your ship to stay ahead of this curve. You can also mitigate this by playing at a lower difficulty than your are capable of (or use the custom difficulty to swing everything in your favor to fit your playstyle.

Ok. That's good to know. I just struggle with basic concepts at this time, and having a playthrough where I can just relax and slowly learn these concepts is nice.

There is no hard end date. Due to living in close proximity to a void engine and with expensive medical techniques, a Star Traders can live for centuries
