Seems like I blew the main quest again, or at least I don't know how to unstick it. Playing Cadar, Steel Song is the bad guy. I chose Zette; I rescued Aldol (I guess it is "rescue", he is badly burned but not dead), and she became the medical provost in year 215. I have visited her on and off for five years and she won't give any story quests. I visited the prince one time, and I had a chance to take Val off with me, but I stuck with Zette. Erik dropped out of the court in the same conversation.
I was off trying to spy effectively during that time, but the only wars I could find to spy for were ones where I didn't have a contact to sell the info to so I couldn't make enough money to break even. Finally I was able to get Steel Song intel and sell to Zette, but just before I arrived I got the story alert that the assassin war was over. More wasted intel. She still wouldn't say anything story-wise, so off to visit the Prince again.
The Prince told me, "If you had come quickly, she could have taken passage with you". So I guess I have hit the events in an unexpected order; he didn't remember that I had turned down the chance or at least there is no separate dialog for that. Now, the prince is still in my contact list, and the text "We have business at Prince Calagan's court" is still there, but the court is empty. I can't find anything to do plot-wise.
What was I supposed to do with Zette, to get something going? Is there a clue I overlooked?
I'm not sure how many others play this way, but I am trying to explore the different branches of this plot, and I haven't been very successful at making save games to back up to. I have a couple, but I guess I need to back up the save directory each time I "suspect" I am about to hit a branch.
