This is somewhat random, but I thought of it when reading the latest update notes. It would be cool to have some way to get closure with a dead contact. So my initial idea is that for one year after a contact dies you can go to their home planet and have the option to "Pay your respects" to his/her family/gravesite. This could trigger a few things.
- Possibly just see a history of work together and missions you undertook for them. - Depending on your rep, you may get a new contact to replace them (since somebody may be stepping in to fill their shoes?). - Depending on your rep, if it was very high, maybe you would get something they left behind for you, credits, epic weapon, chance to recruit a son/daughter as officer. - Depending on things you may get offered a mission (to avenge them?). - Depending or rep or other circumstances maybe there could be possible negative outcomes. Like if you are from the faction that killed them maybe you get jumped, or if you ever failed a mission for them you get sued and lose credits/rep. - You get positive rep with their allies and negative rep with the enemies.
These are all just ideas.

One more mixed result:
- The family solicits your help in building a monument to the contact. Pay money and gain rep, refuse and lose some rep.

Very cool ideas!
As of the last release, the contact's death is now noted in your Captain's Log.

I like all of those ideas, except getting sued by the family for past failed missions. I think loosing the pay and also the resources lost pursuing the mission are punishment enough

This stuff all seems most relevant if there was a Contact who was the heir.
Perhaps stuff we can add as super-gold plating later. At the moment, many KS commitments still to fill!

Yeah, defo more gold plating/finishing touches. I like it because it gives even more life to the characters and completes the contact cycle. Especially when a Prince or something goes, one could see long lines of well wishers visiting and stretching out the mourning process.
The ideas were just me stretching to fill it with some sort of content. They're not necessarily the best or only ideas. I think rep and contact role would be big factors. I could see that lonely, retired xeno hunter who had no family leaving his special blade to his favorite job runner though, with maybe an explore mission to go fetch it. Money and new contacts might be more for nobility etc. I think they would have to be rolled too. No guaranteed rewards for paying respects, just a small possibility that those who really liked you would shower one last blessing on you.
There could even be snarky comments for trying to pay respects to contacts with little or negative rep. "The family steward informs you that the family is in mourning and only true friends are welcome at this time." "The usher meets you at the door and closes it again after giving you one look. You briefly catch him muttering something about vultures gathering wherever there's a corpse.

Hmm, I like this more and more. Thanks for the really cool suggestion. You'd have to find a way to make it light handed and something easy to skip or ignore. Some of my late game captains would be getting a lot of invitations for funerals.
