So I did the first step of escorting Estelle to the Faen Court, then I saw that she was waiting for me for a summit or meeting or something after she left. After that I really went off and just sandboxed the game, picking a Faen to support, developing contacts, trading, building a better ship etc. About 12 years later or so I got a cutscene that Estelle finished doing whatever she was doing, and that questline disappeared from my log.
Had no idea there was a time limit to it. Did I just screw myself from progressing in it for taking too long?

You did not screw yourself. All the plotlines run on their own, which is different from many games. Walking away from the mission is making a decision. I have started a number of different games to get all the different variants of the plots. Some of the variants are really neat!

divini - it was not a bad choice, its find to ignore the stories. However, they do progress on their own, so ignoring them means that you can't go back to them later and expect them to be waiting for you.

I think it is more fun to ignore some of the stories. Do the ones that feel right for your current play through.

Agreed. And, its important to know that you cannot possibly do them all in a single game.

Agreed. And, its important to know that you cannot possibly do them all in a single game. I learned this the hard way trying to do some of the Faen quests and her quests at the same time. That said, I prefer it this way, it makes the universe feel alive. A lot of games lose their flavor when this urgent quest to save the world is put on hold while you go get little Johnny's cat out of a tree, then help Sheila clear her cellar or rats, etc., etc.

warhammer - definitely agree. We made the decision to push the world and stories forward without giving the player special time-freezing capabilities. In the case of the Faens, there needs to be better warning when you are at a cross roads of options.
