Hello,
What I understood :
To escape an encounter without losing reputation we can bribe the other captain who consequently doesn't disparage our reputation. When an encounter occurs, the contact has a disposition toward us which we can make evolve by paying a bribe.
step 1 : I start an encounter with disposition initially Suspicious (-1) but now Hostile (-2)
step 2 : Not a problem, I pay a bribe but surprisingly the game says now the initial disposition was Cautius (0) - I understood it was Hostile (-2) just before my first bribe attempt, isn't it ?!?
This time the final disposition is Suspicious (-1)
This time the final disposition is Cautious (0)
step 4 : So here we go at bribing again from Cautious (0), isn't it ? Nope, the screenshot says Friendly (2) and the bribe lowers the disposition to Neutral (1) (I think with my stupid money I offended the captain who was no longer a friend now )
To me it's like playing to the Russian roulette because the initial disposition of the step N+1 is not the final disposition of the step N. Why for instance step 3 didn't begin with Suspicious (-1) which is the result of my bribe attempt at the step 2 ? It's the same encounter, I don't think so much time has passed to change the captain's mind so quickly between the bribe proposal. I feel there a lack of continuity and it removes some suspens : will the captain accept, or will I offend him/her, or will he/she will be greedy ? And there is a problem of realism : if the initial disposition is Friendly why do the game say "the captain will disparage our reputation" ?
Sorry to have been so long. To sum up: is this a bug or did I understand wrongly the mecanism ?
