Many of the new unlocks can be characterized as "sprints". That is, the way to get them is to start a new captain with a particular unbalanced focus, ignore normal balanced development in favor of pursuing the one goal, and then probably throw away the run after meeting the target. The steam thread on how to reach the unlocks seems to imply this. There are several other games, like Battle Brothers and Total War: Warhammer which I have played a lot, that have "medium term" achieves in addition.
BB was particularly memorable for me. After the early game where I have built up a basic band, there are popups which let me choose from one of three short term goals: (a) develop 3 brothers with heavy armor > 30 points; (b) win 5 fights against liches, (c) ... (I don't recall exactly). The idea is that if I am kind of directionless in the mid game, this can give me a particular focus, where I can react by choosing one of three options that fit the type of playthrough I have in mind. But the goal is just a point along the path, which I might have gotten anyway.
For ST:F the equivalent could be like: Patroller: have at least 5 crew with patrol talents (Supremacy of Firepower, Militant Patrol); Hit and Run (at least 2 level 5 weapons at range 5); Everybody's Friend (+10 rep with every faction), etc.
