I killed an enemy captain via ship combat (not boarding). I know this because I got the "fatal wound" message for a victory condition. However, when arriving at the victory screen, the top message was incorrect: I mean, that may have been true as well, but it wasn't the same kind of message as before.

These are different, prioritized victory messages. Each battle evaluates individually. Hope that helps.

Ok. Both the captain died and the piloting was shot. I got a message about the captain in the combat text, and a message about the piloting (displayed) afterward. If you don't think that is accidental, that's fine by me. I'm not too invested in this.

The order of priority for ship defeats is as follows.
- Hull Destroyed - Captain Killed (killed DEAD) - Piloting - Ship Ops - Ship Morale Loss - Engine Destroyed
Unfortunately for balance, design, effect, cost and user understanding defeats are not multi-faceted.
Defeat is a single deterministic state.

Oh sure. We're miscommunicating here though. That order for defeat is not the same from the victory message in the ship combat screen as it is in the post-combat screen. At least Piloting and Captain Killed are swapped.

Confirmed. The order is now in synch with what Cory Trese posted. Cheers!

Yay! Sorry I was inefficient at communicating that.
