Just a thought. When I'm playing by the rules and rolling over so that all of another factions ships can inspect my cargo and I'm not carrying anything illegal it seems like that should please them, at least a little bit. What about a +1 rep for submitting to inspection when we're not carrying anything illegal?

I can see a Reputation bonus being appropriate if you're carrying Permit goods and have your Permits in order. That seems like the kind of thing that would garner a bonus. Legal cargo I'm not sure they'd be happy or just ambivalent.

That sounds fair. You could configure it such that there's only a certain chance to get a +1 Rep, as if it depends which officer you happen to run across.

I like this idea. I also like the idea of no gain or loss when encountering another faction's non-combat ships like explorers and merchants. If I don't fire a shot we're just 2 ships flying past one another in the void. What's to get upset about?

Ha. Nevermind. Just saw the thread about retreating text. Guess that's one more in favor of more specific text.

But the simulator contains nuance, and honors Rep/Rank/Rumor/Edict/Conflict/Contact/etc to ensure that the player enjoys a variety of scenarios.

I was aware that there are some really deep levels of intricacy in the game that influence the effect side of cause and effect, but I did not know that all of the elements you named were taken into account when determining +/- 1 or 2 rep points. There is definitely a reason why your games are so good and so well loved!
