I thought it was new. It's not?
(I'm new to the franchise and just bought it today.)

I think it's just a matter of market share and dev maintenance time and build time. They're a studio of two developers so they have to be pretty selective about how they spend their time.

Good Ol' Games is a platform for old games, yes, but also some newer games. One of their selling points is that their games are DRM free, which is very attractive to a niche of people (including me!)

No, we are not planning to release Star Traders: Frontiers on GOG.

Ah, well thanks for considering it. Are there any plans to release it direct from your site? (Trying to see if I can get it without having to go through Steam) I'll donate chocolate...??

Also at this time, due to concerns over international tax law, we are not planning to release it directly on our site.

All of our previous attempts at submitting games to GoG have failed, rejected by the store.
We will continue to explore other distribution options in the future.
If we do start doing direct sales on our site it will almost certainly be selling Steam keys.
But as my brother said, the markets provide a lot of value by handling taxes and other things.

Whoa. GoG is hard to submit games to? That seems like a bad position for them to be in if they want to survive against Steam.

Another maybe less obvious advantage of going through a marketplace like steam instead of directly selling is not having to deal with payment security, and this just one aspect of setting up shop.
Credit card fraud can badly hurt small merchants with chargebacks, lost inventory and bank fees on top as well. Big operations like GOG and Steam will have invested a lot of money in automated tools and processes as well as probably a team of human analysts to protect themselves from fraud attacks.
Of course, it would be nice to buy direct but the middlemen handle a lot of annoying stuff.

For a game sold in over 30 countries with different tax laws, VAT and currency conversion, they provide a huge value to small shops.
