It's been a busy year, so I haven't played in a long time. Recently, I decided I could maybe start a new character, since a lot of early stories were added since I last played. I then discovered I could start as a diplomat. Great! What I always wanted. Except, it's locked. I need to obtain the Nikolai's Freedom achievement to unlock it. So I need to free Nikolai and make sure there's no bounty on his head, but ... I've done that already. Nikolai is part of my crew now. It's been a long time, but if I remember correctly, I paid (50,000 credits?) to settle things with the person who'd put a price on his head. Do I remember wrongly, or are achievements not retroactive? (The achievement didn't yet exist when I fulfilled the conditions for the achievement.)

Achievements are retroactive, don't worry! If the award was in the game when you played and you hit the requirements, you got the achievement (in Steam) then. Just check your Steam history to see if you hit it! Thanks

(The achievement didn't yet exist when I fulfilled the conditions for the achievement.) They are retroactive, except in this case. If the achievement was not yet added, then it doesn't retro.

That's why there was a big rush to add the achievement triggers before release, even if the reward wasn't defined yet. Unfortunately, in your case, you did the thing before it was trendy, and the trigger didn't trigger. It's kind of weird that you have him on your crew and the trigger didn't trigger. But you can be happy knowing that you are probably the only player who ever got that :-)

Yippee. Well, I can't pretend I didn't know what I was getting into when I started playing a game in its beta then early-release phases. And I see the developers (and board members) are as responsive as ever, which bodes well for the future of the game.
