Squadron Ragnarok is an oddball among Templar squads. While most squads swear by overwatch, poison, and fire to shred the enemy before they arrive, Ragnarok does not utilize such tactics. Rather, Ragnarok is melee oriented, jumping into the thick of the fight and brawling with the enemy. Retreating is almost never seen, as Ragnarok prefers mid-combat healing over falling back, recovering, then returning to battle. While it may seem that the tactical simplicity of Ragnarok would lead to a high amount of deaths and defeats, it is quite the opposite. As of the time this file was entered, Ragnarok has absolutely no casualties.
The Captain of the squad-and the entirety of a battleforce-is a battle-hungry man named Rachman. Going by the codename Baron, Rachman is a man who, while willing to utilize ranged combat if the situation calls for it, strongly favors an up close and personal approach. From combat reports, Rachman appears to mostly ignore the plasma pistol in favor of a shield-to quote the captain himself, “Eh, firing a pistol isn’t really as adrenaline inducing as slashing a skittering to ribbons with a sword and shield.” Rachman’s skill in melee combat is not to be underestimated-some mission footage shows the captain getting swarmed by hunters for only seconds before Rachman violently trampled and hacked every last hunter who dared strike at him to death with very few injuries himself. The captain also appears to have a very high regard for the Templars under his command, tossing himself into hordes of the enemy to save a Templar that would have been mobbed by said horde. In short, Captain Rachman is a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield, dashing in and slaughtering as much of the enemy as possible. It is due to this impulsive close and personal behavior that is likely the reason that Rachman’s personal squad, Ragnarok, is full of Berserker Templars as eager to fight as their captain is.
Ragnarok, as previously mentioned, is entirely composed of Berserkers. Ragnarok had five Berserkers at the time this file was written up. As it stands now, one Berserker is oriented for grenadier duty (from here on out such Berserkers are now called Assault Grenadiers), another Berserker is optimized for maximum destruction (referred to as Brawlers from here on out), another berserker is oriented for maximum defense and soaking damage (called Juggernauts from here on out), and two generalist Berserkers that can fulfill any duty. From what we have seen, Rachman typically does not deploy Ragnarok without some backup from Paladin Templars for on the spot battlefield healing, as well as deploying other Templar classes if the need arises. However, it is with Ragnarok that Rachman seems to be the most comfortable around, seeing as both Ragnarok and Rachman share the same enthusiasm for melee combat-as such, Rachman can be surprisingly tactically adept when issuing commands to Ragnarok. From what we have seen, Rachman typically has some Ragnarok Berserkers stand at his side to create a “wall of steel”(Typically the squad’s Juggernaut and a generalist Berserker, but if more Templars can be deployed, then the Brawler and the other generalist Berserker) with the Assault Grenadier and a Paladin trailing behind Rachman’s wall of steel. Tactics are simple but deceptively brutal-the wall of steel inexorably advances, while the Assault Grenadier cleans out clumps of enemies that might overwhelm the wall while the Paladin provides battlefield healing for seriously injured Templars. The wall itself continues a slow march towards the enemy, and if the situation up ahead looks bad, the wall activates defensive systems and servos on board their Leviathan suits in order to cut down the incoming horde.
Once Rachman determines that Ragnarok is at a location set by him on the spot, the “wall of steel” disperses. All Ragnarok Berserkers at this point head out on their own to seek out and kill any hostiles they find, including the Captain and, if a Paladin was accompanying Ragnarok, the Paladin as well. While simple in execution, it is a brutally effective move, as each and every Ragnarok Berserker have been given special training by Rachman on the arts of fighting in close combat-preparing oneself for the inevitable attack, bringing down an enemy in only a few strikes, and so forth. As such, anything that the Berserkers have in their sights are, to quote Captain Rachman, “...good as dead.”
However, it is not recommended for Templar High Command to deploy Ragnarok in situations where stealth and speed are necessary. As if the lack of a dedicated Scout and the fact that Ragnarok is composed entirely of Berserkers means that Ragnarok is ill-suited for missions where stealth is key enough, Rachman’s tactics typically slow the team down, sacrificing mobility in favor of defense and power. Instead, it is highly recommended that High Command deploys Ragnarok on missions where the fighting is thickest, or when an enemy stronghold must be breached. Ragnarok is highly capable of cutting down large amounts of the opposition, thinning out the opposition for allies to capitalize on.
It is in breaching enemy strongholds that Ragnarok truly shines, however. The grenades that the squad’s Assault Grenadier carries cover a larger blast area than typical frag or concussion grenades, and as such, it is faster to clear out a room for the rest of the squad to advance through. On top of that, Ragnarok’s specialization in melee combat shines due to the close quarters combat nature when fighting indoors. As such, if the Templars require an enemy stronghold to be cleared out, then Ragnarok is perfect for the job.
In summary, Ragnarok is a highly melee-oriented squad lead by the Templar Captain Rachman, codename Baron. Ragnarok’s tactics are simple but brutally effective-advance in a defensive formation until the time comes to commence phase two, which is having every Berserker individually seek and destroy all hostiles in the area. It is highly ill-advised to deploy Ragnarok on missions where stealth and speed is key. On the other hand, it is highly recommended to deploy Ragnarok in areas where the fighting is thickest, as well to enemy strongholds that the Templars need cleared out. In the one mission Ragnarok has gone on-in this case, investigating the Ferarai Lance wreck, the results are promising-every last survivor Ragnarok was able to find made it out alive without any casualties from the Templars, while a scan on the Ferarai Lance revealed that every last xeno on board the wreck was slaughtered. One can only hope that Ragnarok is able to pull off feats like the Ferarai Lance investigation in the future.
