So here I am late-game normal difficulty cruising around Alzean core on the default map. Normally I'm friendly to Templars, but this time I decide to blockade one of the Templar planets just to see what happens.
Sure enough, a Templar military ship comes out to fight.
It is a thoroughly unremarkable cruiser crewed by the same kinds of people we see on faction military ships.
I confess to being a little disappointed; I was expecting a spear cutter crewed by leviathan battle-mechs which would utterly wreck my day.
Perhaps that would be a good thing to put in? As it is, the Templars are easy money for a pirate. You can earn money and records through blockade or spy and they have little way either to incentivize good behavior or punish bad. They do not give permit, edict , or rank, so there is no possibility of losing it. Contacts are rare, so it is unlikely I will miss out on rare trade goods. They do not send out bounty hunters , and no one else will hunt on their behalf. Their military ships can only be encountered directly in orbit of a Templar planet, and actually encountering one takes great patience.
The most they can do, aside from the occasional military ship no better than a faction vessel, is close the port. Woe is me, whatever will I do without access to a port that sells/buys at F rating and is moreover so restrictive you can't sell basic medicine!
And there's a part of me that thinks the Templars are getting what they deserve when a faction pirate picks on them this way; "Templars do not join Star Traders", indeed!
So if the Templars are going to be so standoffish, and won't incentivize good behavior as the factions do, then they'd better have a military deterrent so powerful that anyone who even thinks of messing with the Templars will regret it for the rest of their lives. All 15 or so minutes of them.
Respectfully,
Brian P.
