Starting contact supports contact that opposes him

This starting contact supports Aetaan Char, a contact that that opposes him. Although this screenshot is from current version, I have seen starting contacts support someone who opposes them several times in past versions. It doesn't make sense for contacts to support their enemies, does it?

Only if they know that somebody is their enemy, but of course if they do not know how is a lowly star trader able to find out?
