I took the quest. I killed the first pirate in a ship battle. I killed the real target in a ship battle. I did this by boarding, killing, repeating, and getting an option to sabotage the enemy engine. I did. Went back on board and _BOOM_ the enemy ship blew up.
But in the aftermath of that battle -- I got the 'you could destroy, which could upset the Hunna' option. And lots of cargo to loot. But they should already be blown to smithereens, now.
I definitely did not destroy the ship with ship weapons, so it must have been that sabotage. I don't have any weapons that work at level 1, swapped them for armoured bulkheads.

This is not a bug. For some stories, the story event hardwires the defeat type. Otherwise, you could have ended up with "oops, you blew up their hull ... end of story, sorry!"

Then why did I get the graphics of the ship blowing up. Shouldn't that we hardwired to show something else, too?

Yep, that would be great too!
It doesn't do that today tho.
