Finally trying out salvaging. I was excited about a green card “new trait” and when I pick it, the “back” of the card says that a negative trait is removed from a crew member, but then on the info box to the right, it just says a number of crew members learned something and got some XP. I checked the crew manifest, since I track all the crew’s negative traits, and no negative traits such as Drunk or Highbrow were removed.
Is the card only to remove a conditionable trait? That would be too bad.
A follow up question: do you dismiss crew members with unconditionable negative traits? About a third of my crew has at least one and it got too frustrating to keep dismissing and rehiring.

This is a known bug. Got me too. Will be fixed soon. You should have had a negative trait, any sort removed but you didn't.
There are 2 sorts of trait removers in the game, who handle different sorts of traits, so perhaps those traits can be removed after all?
Drunk, Spice Addict, and Highbrow cannot, alas.
Highbrows and Snobs tend to come in clumps, so if you recruit from a place and get one, stop recruiting there 'cause you will (very likely) get more.

@orcaflutter - the fact that you had a green card saying "new Trait" and then saying "no trait removed" is a new report. Any idea what the card title was exactly? If you see it again, please capture screenshots.

No, not if the card said "new Trait" and the result said "can't remove Trait." Just reading the OP.

Sorry I can’t attach a screenshot. I’m not sure it’s a bug, but maybe just the absence of an explanatory note (such as we were talking about Vytautas’s backstory on another thread.)
First and importantly, my crew did not have any conditionable traits. They only had things like Drunk, Spice Addict, Stubborn, etc.
The salvage card read “New Trait” before selection. Then after selected, the obverse of the card read “remove a negative trait from one member of your crew.” Horray! However, the information box to the right of the card says that a number (4) of my crew learned a lot and gained (40+) experience points each. I checked my crew manifest: no negative traits were removed from any crew member. I wasn’t tracking XP but I presume these were added as stated.
So my question is, are conditionable traits the only traits count as negative? Put another way, was the XP a consolation for not getting the promised reward?

(There was no dialog box stating “can’t remove trait.” It was only that none were actually removed. The colored stars make tracking that easy! So thanks for putting that feature in.)

sorry I haven’t gotten an image hosting account for a screenshot, but I’ve done some more test salvages. It does appear that the “Crew Trait” salvage card can only remove conditionable traits. No other negative traits can be removed
Speaking to Gravling’s “New Trait” bug report above, that appears to be still happening. Is it possible that the game chooses a crew member at random, then tries to add a trait? So that if that particular crew member already has 5 traits, the game will go directly to the error message without choosing a different crew member that has less than 5?

I just got the 'drew new Trait card but, near as I can tell, didn't get one and got the message about how dangerous things are salvaging' problem and it is early enough in this game that not a single crew member of mine has 5 traits. (We are off to take the Arbiter on her visit to the next quad, and found a salvage opportunity with 3 green cards and where the only red ones threaten loss of rep with a faction I intend to enrage anyway. So, why not?) Will download screenshot later.

I would request some mechanism (random or user-initiated) to modify the negative, non conditionable traits. The Crew Trait salvage cards would seem great for that because they are rare. By the third era, my crew have already have regular checkups with their Chaesin, and have 5 other traits, so there would be no other purpose for the Trait cards. But I understand if you don’t want to for game balance reasons. It would still be informative to add a message “only conditionable traits can be removed by this card”
The auto-acknowledge ship encounter would be great also, even though it would impact a game mechanic (acknowledging a faction in a solar war). As well as an auto-retreat for neutral hostility (or cautious for non military ships). I would be willing to take a 1-2 rep hit every now and then for that convenience. It would work like auto-refuel
