Pilot Assist Modules primarily increase Pilot soak, but they also increase Ship Ops soak by a smaller amount. I think they should increase Nav as a secondary bonus instead of Ship Ops.
Some extra Nav is usually needed for Pilot builds to have the range change to get to 1-3 range. I often have a Nav Assist Module or two on ships built with high Pilot, but having some Nav soak on Pilot Assist Modules would make that unnecessary, and allow a stronger focus on Pilot.
Edit: Also it would better match the Pilot job's skills, because Pilot's have Nav as a secondary skill

Wow, sounds like it would be a huge bonus to the defensive all-pilot build to gain Nav along with one of the top tier Pilot components.
Maybe a separate line of components could add to both specifically with a focus on both-but-less.

Gar, lost a long response. In short:
Pilot+Ops makes sense to me as a pair, Pilot+Nav does strike me as too good if with something like the current numbers.
What about Nav Modules, now that we’ve had E as a Strong def. die for awhile? The pairing makes sense to me, but I’m using them more than ever. Lower the E rating, to shift people seeking E more toward Sensors?
What if you could install only 1 of any specific “bonus” component on a ship? So no stacking ... let me see ... seven Nav4s on my Harbinger.
I guess the danger is people gravitating toward the same mix. Well off topic now, but there’s a host of components I think interesting, but not-worth-it when balanced against stacking multiple def-dice components and *not getting hit.*

Wow, sounds like it would be a huge bonus to the defensive all-pilot build to gain Nav along with one of the top tier Pilot components. Maybe a separate line of components could add to both specifically with a focus on both-but-less. I don't think it would be overpowered. Building a ship with a lot of Pilot Assist Modules is a relatively weak strategy right now.
Defense Matrices are better for defense than Pilot Modules. The only reason to take Pilot Modules over Defense Matrices is for more Acc and Range Change at range 1-3, however, the Pilot advantage can't be made use of unless the player gets into range 1-3, so the player either needs to invest in Nav Modules or use a range change talent for crossing 4-5 ranges. If the player uses Nav Modules, they have to sacrifice slots that would otherwise go to Pilot Modules, and they have a relatively lower defense pool compared to what they could have had. If they use a talent for increasing range change or Twitch Surge, then they would be forced to use that for the first one or two turns instead of starting with a defensive talent, which also negatively impacts the defensive potential of Pilot Assist builds.
Compared to long range or mid range Electronics builds with a mix of components like Defense Matrix, Nav Assist, and Sensor Arrays, I don't think Pilot Assist builds are competitive.
If still doubting, maybe consider splitting the secondary skill soak of Pilot Assist between Ship Ops and Nav?
