Brutal Mode

Ok, so I was playing brutal mode for the first time, and I had been working for los v (character was a cybersword, and I had clive zep with me) and I had been taking jobs against the yakuza. As I was heading back to los v territory from copely square, I was attacked by the yakuza and killed. I checked how long I had survived for and that character died in less than 4 days. Any idea on how to improve?

Sometimes you just get a bit of bad luck. There may have been nothing wrong with what you were doing to level up your knight or your play style. Yakuza attack squads are some of the main killers of characters just starting out. Keeping a fairly good reputation with them lowers the chance of hostile encounters. Having enough move points that you can outrun and escape them is the next best way to survive.

As you ramp up the difficulty, it can be important to really watch the neighborhoods you are working in more closely. Going into Yakuza, Brave Star, KH or megacorp territory can be a death sentence if you get the wrong encounter that early in the game. I'd suggests slumming it in gang territory until you've survived a week or two at least!

The harder the difficulty, the more risk averse you should be. Focus on building up your rep with as many factions as you can while using one as the target, BUT rotate the target factions so you don't end up going too far into the negative that you are attacked on sight.

Don't be afraid to reject missions that involve having to kill a mark until you've built up your skills and money (gear) accordingly.

Another good tip is to finish the Los V's ladder. By the time you do, you'll be well over 150 rep with them. You'll get a lot of free goodies that'll help too. It's good to keep a good basic rep with the Free Streets. After working up the Los V's I would suggest the Fennian next.
