Silly me made a big weapon trade but of course there was a Javat trade embargo. I went fromt slightly positive rep with Clan Javat to uber negative. Is there a way to get back into positive with Javat? Or should I just start again? I don't want to lose my big profit!

You may wait for certain Faction Conflicts, to modify your rep: Solar/Trade Wars, Duel of assassins conflicts,or everything Javat is involved in(and obviously encouraging the Javat house); So,if you're a combat-style player, pick your ship and go to the Javat's opponent planet,in the just started Solar War where Javat is one of the two contenders, and blast every ship you encounter(making patrol, or surveillance/blockade if your skills are appropriate)...=) You will see a good increase of your rep with Javat, sure =)

eric - definitely take slides advice. Play the global conflicts to your advantage, just as they played again you. If you trade, spy or fight on the right side of such a conflict, you can regain your reputation with Javat if you are crafty.

I once went from -1400 or something rep. with Syndicate Rychart, to over +1000 through Solar Wars. You can DEFINITELY do the same with -130.

Yup, of course in the process, your RP with another faction will go down dramatically. For me the fastest way would be the solar war approach, where if Javat and Steel Song (yes, I can't let it go) are in a solar war, then I'd go and blockade a SS planet a good one or two .. hundred times. A hundred solar war blockade actions should almost certainly get you out of the red with Javat, and push you down with SS almost as much as you went up.
The nice thing about blockades and surveillance is that I've found your reputation doesn't go down as much as it goes up.
Best case scenario is when you find a faction that you don't care about, and it's got a solar war with three other factions. You effectively get the chance to print "I love you letters" signed by those three other factions.
One caveat ... when you look at the solar wars, also pay attention to alliances. If you care about Javat and Cadar, and get into the situation: Javat and Steel Song are at solar war Steel Song and Cadar are in alliance
Then you'll go up in RP with Javat but go DOWN in RP with Steel Song and Cadar.
Worse, you'll probably lose ranks / permits with Cadar.

slayernz, pretty sure you won't lose rep with cadar for blockades, only if you start destroying ships in that situation

Absolutely right Shallowthought - but if you blockade for more than 100 turns, you're almost certainly going to have an encounter, and since I am Cadar at heart, if someone confronts me, I feel, need, have, am honor-bound by blood, spirit, heart, and mind to push that flashing red button in front of me. I usually do try and look for any debris that has a faction flag painted on it afterwards though. If only to keep score. Oh oh oh .. feature request. Have a kill log that records the number of ships you defeat and number of ships you destroy by faction! ... it'd be interesting to see if I did really kill 5x as many Steel Song ships as any other faction

eric: other ways to improve relationship without loosing rep with another faction are Trade alliances: watch out for those Javat is involved and get a trade permission with the other party. Then start selling artifacts, weapons or electronics. Once your reputation with Javat is good enough, something around -50 I believe, they would also offer you contracts in the spice hall again. Take those contracts against independents (no faction mentioned in the text), you'll lose some morale with your crew though but nothing that can't be fixed.

That is, unless you are a pirate, where no moral is lost.
