Space Radiation and crew not dying

I was flying around on 3.4.7 and went through some nasty radiation storm. I got a toaster saying that some crew died (I forget what number), and that I got burned.

I looked at the ship's details and the crew numbers remained the same as before the encounter. Do I have zombie crew now?

I think if you have combinations like great morale, a ship in good shape, and a little luck, you can avoid actual damage and death. I have had a few toasts like that but avoided the actual damage.
