I know they say be careful what you ask for, but think it would be interesting if some of the AI had ships with upgrades installed.
I know the stats for X ship but imagine my surprise when after winning a combat I find it has extended gun decks on it or got the close range drop on me due to an Omni-Stealth upgrade.
Not sure if this is something that could be done with ST or if it would have to be a possibility for ST2.
Also wouldn't want all enemies to have upgraded ships, just a small percentage say 5-10%

Yeah, not a big percentage please. Some people like to capture rather than buy ships, and it would irritate them to no end to keep getting ships with upgrades they don't want & can't remove.

None of the code in combat takes into account the possibility that the enemy ships contain upgrades.
So if we did add them, they wouldn't make combat harder (without a lot of work) but they would be there if you "captured" the ship.
Enemy ship variation is a big part of the Star Traders game universe, both for ST and ST2.

So there won't be any change to combat challenge, but you'll have higher scrap metal, and you'll have better ships if you decide to keep them, but perhaps the disadvantages may outweigh the advantages here.
1. You won't be able to upgrade those slots. Assuming there is a random allocation of upgrades, you might find that the ship has a really basic upgrade, and you won't be able to do anything about it because as you know, upgrades can't be removed.
2. Not only does the coding around ship encounters need to be changed (to add in upgrades to ships), but UI changes would need to be implemented. Right now, you don't get to inspect an enemy ship, so taking one over would be like buying a car without looking under the hood. You just don't know if you are getting upgrades - or if they are any good
3. If there is any variability to quality for upgrades (based on the planet that you got them fitted on), then you'd have to add a variable for that in any upgrade code added. That further adds to the blind vehicle purchase.
So I'm guessing that although you don't get ships with built in upgrades, you do get a game with well over a hundred different types of ships. It's not ships with built in upgrades - but it is huge variability all the same.

slayernz Your points are well taken and why I said it might be a better idea for ST2. That said I find it very odd that the players are the only ones with upgraded ships and the attendant bonuses in the quadrant. Who supports the upgrade industry? The player can't be the only captain buying ship upgrades or else no starport could afford to offer them. Yes there are a lot of different ships available, but I look at them like your basic car. The basic model of car is fine for the majority, but some will want to pay the extra for a higher option package or after market upgrades. As for the risks of seizing a ship with upgrades you don't want...that would just be a risk you would have to take. If you don't want to chance it buy a new one yourself. Otherwise just look to capture another ship that may not have upgrades or has ones you like better. This idea is for me at least about adding a bit more realistic depth to the game and adding the intrigue of possibly discovering an unexpected bonus in an encounter. Play the game long enough and you know the basic stats for most of the ships you'll encounter. Having some with upgrades puts some of the thrill back into your encounters. Chances are that it's just another Pirate Skylift or Pirate Crossbow...but what if it's not?

Yeah I do agree with you - finding ship mods would be an awesome addition to the game ... as would be finding named enemies (another ST2 request). Pairing the two features together ... Find the Dread Pirate Roberts, and his ship Revenge. The ship has the following upgrades making it nigh on impossible to capture, and invaluable to keep. Of course, capturing the Revenge will result in your name being changed to Roberts until you relinquish command to another.

I'm all about becoming the Dread Pirate Roberts, even though I do so love to say..."My name is Indego Montoya, You killed my father, Prepare to die!"
