My issue is enemy ships doing 15+ damage early in the game, while I'm doing between 0-5 avg. Is this normal? These attacks seem to happen at random so I assumed it was them getting a critical hit, but now I've had to restart about 5 times because it either kills me or wipes out my bank account in repairs. The worst was a repair shuttle who did 43 damage on my second contract. In all other respects I had him clearly out classed.
If it matters I'm playing on challenging with the Vae vitus.

In the beginning, your combat will suck. Best to prevent being a wanted criminal and getting smuggler's hold upgrade in the beginning to be able to surrender to all MO and BH, and surrender to pirates unless your level is higher than them. Once you've invesed a good amount into your skills and your at lv5 - lv10, you can do combat. Until then, surrender or escape if you can.

Wow the game really should let you know combat is off limits regardless of class for the start. I guess I'll try being a cowardly taxi service until I level up.

The game lets you know by caving your skull in until you adjust tactics to survive. I died at level 8 to aliens on Demanding, and that's only the halfway mark for difficulty. _______________________________ "Issue the standard Cadar greeting, Ensign." zalztorus - welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your experience. All Trese Brothers games have a very serious difficulty scale, and it often takes people off guard because they simply don't expect Challenging to be so! It's a great point about trying to warn people that early combat is bad. Through what means would you, personally, have gotten the message best? If the First Mate told you? If you saw it in the "intro screens" explaining the game, or if it was int he help file? We'd love your feedback. And again, welcome to the community!

First mate warnings would be cool, though for every encounter it might get a little annoying. Intro screen would be best in my oppinion

If you are experienced, combat is bearable when you start out, even in the most difficult levels. It pays to pick the right captain class to suit a combat-oriented play. For example, picking a Spy gives you immediate boosts to Pilot, Tactics, AND Stealth, which certainly help with initital combat. Obviously it is useful to avoid confrontations, but you also need to understand the tactics involved when you do get into scrapes.
If you're just starting out with the game - do try basic or normal. There is SO much to learn in the game learning the basics in, well, basic is a very good option indeed.

But I guess everyone has different oppinions and strategies in ST, which is what makes ST so cool.

Combat really isn't off limits at the start. You can, with practice, come out fighting on Impossible. It might help playing some practice games on Normal or Basic, to get a hang of combat without the frustration of dying. Some tips... 1. Don't be afraid to Surrender 2. Start combat with Torps 3. Raise your Pilot and Stealth early 4. Don't press the same button over and over

1. Never surrender. 2. Torp. 3. Roast escape pods with engines. 4. Press the Torp button over and over The Cadar way.

@starfixer, I am not saying that combat is easy in Impossible - but rather, you understand the lay of the land and therefore manage your combat situations carefully. You still lose 9 captains out of 10 - but if you've played lots of games at easier levels, you understand that 10% survival rate is pretty damned good

deff dont press the same button over and over again...I always seemed to died abruptly whenever i did that. i like raising my tactics as well seems to help my torps land deadly before i close in and possibly board possibly blow their engines and loot the pirate ships hold, oops they didnt expect that!
