Ok, so here goes a little idea I had. I need to go back and unlock Independent Captain, but I thought I might make it a little bit of a community challenge/competition. You can see the details below but the idea is basically to define a certain style of gameplay and come up with a way of scoring it. Everybody who wants to play must play between certain dates and then we can declare a champion. It's all the in name of fun though and since there's no way to really monitor it, there are no prizes just the honor and respect of fellow Star Traders. So without further ado... Calling all spacers to the Independent Captain Community Challenge!Dates: Friday April 12th to Sunday April 21st. Rules: - Captain Type: Any, but they must be started on the 12th or after. - After level 12 you must maintain reputation below -50 with all syndicates and factions. - At level 15 your captain is a "bona fide contender" and when he dies you may not restart. i.e. you may restart a captain if he is killed before level 15. (Side Rule: no banking more than 50xp.) - Difficulty level: Hard Scoring:- All negative reputation below -121 added together plus the number of turns played divided by 2. Basically the winner is the most hated player and you'll get a small boost from surviving longer. Use this thread to announce your intention to play, your captain's name (a brief bio if you wish explaining his hatred for the civilized worlds) and other details, announce if you are restarting or when you captain becomes a "bona fide contender" and finally post screenshots of your faction rep page and turns played. Remember to take screenshots often since, once you die, you can't go back and find your rep page!!! |

I'm in with Captain Schadenfreude, a sadist of the first AND second order and scourge of the civilized spaceways.
A 'freedom fighter', he fights people who think themselves 'free', when their very souls are in hock to the Syndicates and Great Houses. The fact that shafting these poor, deluded peons of the Factions dovetails with his delight in the suffering of others is, to be sure, simply a happy coincidence. <cough cough>

All right, cool to see we've got a group started, hopefully we'll get a bunch of players before Friday. I would love to see a few of the epic players on here showing their stuff, but I don't know if we can get slayernz to put down TA and @starfixer to abandon his captain that's at level 300 something for awhile. I will be starting with Captain Ernesto Gutierrez, privileged son of De Valtos elites. At the moment he is a rising Star Trader, following proudly in his father's footsteps. Soon an encounter with the Head Preacher will convince him that the Syndicates' and Houses' prosperity is founded on its oppression and exploitation of the independent worlds. This realization will spark a profound change that, if The Maker wills, will see him become one of the brightest lights of the Popular Front for the Deliverance of Non-Aligned Worlds. |

I'm in - principally for the fact I have actually never set out to achieve this award. Of course, Steel Song have been torn asunder, but I'm generally an amiable captain who likes to be liked. This should be interesting  |

Ok, the challenge starts tomorrow, a little sooner for those in Asia/Down Under.
I've updated the original post. Difficulty level is Hard!
If you're interested in playing just announce your captain here anytime before or after the start date. You don't need to be going for the award for the first time to play.

Let the Challenge Begin!
I'll be launching Ernesto later today.
Also to clarify a rule, captains cannot be existing captains. They must be started new for this competition on the 12th or later, but you are welcome to join at anytime before the Challenge ends on the 21st.
Also, to call out a few more players I'd like to see on here: Abs, Mme Badger, Cap'n Nemo, Ncaoa, Jr8825, the Torp the Person Above You crowd (lets see if you know how to fire real torps), slawyer? Ok, really I'd love to see everybody get in on this.
Oh and Devs are welcome to play to. You're just not allowed to win.

Well Ernesto is now a contender. We'll see how long he makes it. Thanks to everyone who has joined so far. I've attached a screen shot of his xp so far. He's at 2692 turns. He's flying a tricked out Spear Class and has yet to face a serious challenge in a fight. Attachments:

I thought I would do a mid-contest check-in. I don't even know how many players we've got in the running.
My captain Ernesto is past level 15 and has a score of 4767 of which 2648 comes from negative rep and 2119 comes from turns played. Where is everyone else at?

OK, I'm starting to get the feeling that I'm the only one still going on this. Is anyone else playing? If not, I'm getting a little bored destroying ships and am going to stop once I hit a little goal I have.

contributor - I did not join because it is beyond my skill range. I have to admit, I am not so great at Star Traders! Hopefully some others will join. I was syndicating some of your posts to Facebook to try to gain some additional joiners.

Okay first up - I am soooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooo tempted to smite you Lurker because I had carefully weaned myself off StarTraders after more than a year of playing the thing daily. I had gotten my life back. yes, I was playing TA, but that's discrete chunks of a TB-fix. I HAD MY LIFE BACK!!! <shakes fist>.
Because of your challenge, I've rediscovered the joy of ST ... rediscovered the pleasure of buying, selling, doing missions, killing Aliens, killing Steel Song (yes, I still get pleasure from smearing their remains all over the quadrant). Captain Target (the fourth) has just gotten to the position where he can cause indiscriminate damage. He's got a combined -911 from 5 factions, and umm ... I've forgotten where to find the Turn count <sheepish grin>.
I'll beat Ernesto - or die trying ... or do tie-dying ...
