I'm playing a pirate now, mostly because I thought that I would be able to attack independent ships without loss of moral. That really comes in handy when flying around in red squares a lot. I can go a long time without touching down by pillaging water-fuel from merchants, smugglers and anyone else.
On the new captain screen the descriptive text for pirates says something like "Pirate crews do not lose moral when acting against independents." Paying attention to it, however, I am losing moral when I attack independent ships, so I'm wondering if that's a bug, or if the protection from moral loss only applies to certain actions like completing a contract against independents.

Much thanks. If pirates don't lose morale from any action against independents they will definitely become my new favorite class.

Work against Independents -- this is related to Contracts, not Ships.
Even Pirate Crews fall under the rule documented as "man, those guys are just trying to get by Indy style"

Thanks Cory. I can't imagine why you guys have a soft spot for the indies.

I remember reading somewhere that if you recruit more of your crew from Faction worlds instead of indy planets, they are less likely to feel bad about whooping on indy ships. So if you are getting complaints, just go exploring somewhere hostile and let them get vaporized, then replenish with people who know a little better... (Mods, please correct if I'm wrong)
