Playing on the right difficulty?
Also, just "negative" doesn't cut it if I recall. How negative are you?

-8 with 4 factions and- 6 and- 11 with the others. Playing normal. Wasn't aware there was a difficulty set limit.

boeu, lots of awards are difficulty contingent.
Cory, I suggest color coding the award backgrounds.
But don't just go with bronze, silver, and gold. The really tough awards should be on plaid.

I was afraid you'd suggest purple or pink but plaid actually works fine. Tartan could also be good. I'm not a big fan of paisley though.

Black and white houndstooth for the "I have no idea what this text says award."
You get the plaid award for reaching ludicrous speed.

That would be the "I canna give her any more captain" award.
Then we'd have the blood-red award "Out of red shirts" award for losing 1,000 crew to wilderness accidents.
Oh .. and the "He's dead Jim" award for losing 4 or more of the same body part. Also blood red, although gangrene green could be appropriate.

The Scotty award has to be for a mechanical officer who does a thousand fixes while underway. Scotty took forever to fix stuff unless they were under fire.

Yeah ... he always made his estimates 4x as much as they really were. However, he was a wizz with the ole warp drive thing. Hmmm, it would be useful having warp drives in ST, or at least a couple of worm holes connecting parts of the map together. Hmmm ... actually, having random worm holes appearing and taking you from A to C when you were really wanting to go to B would be a great hazard. Better than the old radiation one

Alien tow trucks. They show up and if they get into boarding range, they tow you to some crappy backwater planet and hit you with a big bill.
Hey, what about paying a pirate to leave you alone instead of surrendering?

Yes I like the idea of color coding the award backgrounds.
