I'd like to play the game as a bounty hunter, a pirate, or both at the same time assuming that is feasible. In a game as complex and challenging as this, I'd love all the advice and help I can get from the community!
Thanks and cheers

Hey there azuredreamsxt, not to shill for myself but I wrote up a pirating guide a while ago. Click here to go check it out. I'm sure there are more advanced players than I that can give you advice, but that guide works relatively well for me! Happy hunting!

Haha thanks for posting that, I finally think I'm ready to try my first game. I love/hate plunging into games like this because I refuse to play on easy difficulty settings even as a beginner and the learning curve of such beasts tends to be painful, but man the reward for sticking it out is usually awesome. Dwarf Fortress, King of Dragon Pass, etc etc. ST Elite should be (hopefully) similar!

In this game can you buy massive leviathan-esque warships brimming with heavy weaponry? I've read that being a good captain trumps having a great ship, and obviously such a ship would only be useful for certain play styles (if at all in this game?) but I love a good battlecruiser in scifi games

Especially once you start tacking on upgrades!

As a bounty hunter you can certainly play the pirate card. My current bounty hunter captain has preyed on any independent or syndicate vessel that crosses his path.

I tend to favor the smaller ships with more focused weaponry, but if I'm remembering correctly one of our admins (paging slayernz) is pretty knowledgeable about using larger ships. Whenever I try to take a slower ship I find myself pounded into dust so I don't really know how you would go about using the larger ships.

Actually, large ships are not necessarily the best for piracy type/bounty hunter styles of game play. The biggest problem with large ships is that although they may be bristling with guns, their Engine to Hull ratio (EHr) is usually quite low, and incidentally their Sail to Hull ratio (SHr) is also pretty low.
SAY you had two captains going against eachother, each on the same level, with the same pilot skill (eg 40). Your ship has a huge hull of 40, with 40 engines. His ship had a hull of 20, with 40 engines. Who do you think would be able to rule range determination. he will be able to advance or retreat almost at-will against you, because your EHr is 1, and his EHr is 2.
Put another way: Arguments for big ships Often large crew, cargo, and weapons Better survivability against RAM attacks
Arguments against big ships EHr limitations SHr limitations (you don't see many capital ships flying around with 0.0 WF consumption in green zones) Repainting the ship costs a LOT more due to increased surface area.
Large ships for boarding type players If you are the type of player who likes to do boarding actions, then a large ship can actually be an advantage to you. First, you can indeed have large numbers of crew, helpful in overcoming the enemy. You would offset your low EHr with high Pilot skills. You would still need high Warrior skill too because once you are boarding, Warrior becomes a paramount skill to have.
Large ships for gun-bunny type players You can still use large ships in gun fights if you have high Pilot skills. You do, as a general rule, have more guns on a capital ship than a fighter. The only two ships with 50 guns are the Rear Carrier and the Sword Cruiser (40 and 42 hull respectively). The Rear Carrier only has 28 engines (sucky EHr), but if you have decent pilot skills, a couple of shots from these ships will shred most other ships before they have a chance.
One last thing to mention - you should always have a Pilot skill higher than your hull size, or at the very least Pilot + Intimidate. Don't expect to be able to fly a capital ship with hull of 40 when you're fresh into the game because you'll be fresh meat for the first pirate to fly around you. Wait, train, and pick your ship to suit the way you want to play.
Large ships do have their place in the game, especially late-stages where you've gotten your captain high in Pilot skill. They can carry more stuff, cause more damage, and are tough to boot.

The most important aspect for any captain is to know that the explody end of the torp goes TOWARDS the bad guy.
