Hi all, This is my first post. I played around with the trial version on normal for a while until I realized you couldn't die. I bought the full version and went through a frustrating learning curve on challenging but I've finally got a capitan who made it past the 5-6 range. Serazon Malfise is a Cadari pirate who has been operating for about 100 years. He is well respected in the Syndicates, having spent some of his younger years moving guns and artifacts while taking advantage of some lucrative trade alliances. Steel Song and Thulun despise him and he is an on-again, off-again ally with House Javat. In his old age, Serazon has taken to funding and leading expeditions with mixed results.
So, yeah. Enjoying the game but I do have a few noob questions, probably with more to follow. First, what's the benefit of increasing rank beyone 1? Serazon is a high ranking in each Syndicate but I can't see any benefit in continual promotions. Next, I've read about your character gaining behind-the-scenes marks for certain factions, like slaver or mass murderer. Basically, Serazon's not all bad but he definitely preyed on the Independents in his early days. Slaving, murder, everything bad. So, what kind of effect does that stuff have?

Hey Unfinity Great that you are enjoying the game so much, and have gotten through the first humps of the learning curve. There is still so much to discover because this game has more depth than ... well a very deep thing!
Regarding ranks. Ranks help out in a great number of things. First up, weapons and ship repairs are cheaper as you move up the ranks. When you are around 11-12 rank, you'll find torps are only about 100 credits each!
Additionally, ranks help you with encounters. You get a lot more ships (of that faction) that just require acknowledgement, and a lot less that you need to "ignore". Also, pirates will always retreat on encounters rather than attack. The only exception could be Thulun because let's face it, they're not the sharpest tacks in the galaxy, and might not realize they need to treat ranked pilots with respect.
I'm not 100% sure, but I also think that higher ranks help you when you go to see the Doctor. Your Rank along with Reputation will definitely help the numbers of recruits waiting in the spice halls.
Finally, even though you probably don't need to go so high, it's always rather satisfying seeing your rank as "Holy Titan" (Rank 18 for Syndicates), or "Exemplar Dragoon Reaver" (Rank 18 for the Noble Houses).

Also, more ranks give you more chances to screw up and get demoted before your faction stops considering you a military officer. I like to have a buffer of 6 or 7 ranks so I can screw up and sell records in a spy battle and not lose rank protection. Yes, buying ranks back is expensive, but it's cheaper than getting torped after a dishonorable discharge.
"Guys, sure I sold photos of the Admiral's 'naked but for hats' party to the Javat, but keep in mind that now you know that they know and that they were in the market to find out. Here's a few thousand spacebucks for you to use to seek out the real mole in your House while I get my rank back. Now, I know you don't need to inspect my hold, but you might be interested in the recordings I've made of the the Rychart Ambassador being prank called by a fake hat merchant."

a few thousand spacebucks for you I've always assumed that the quadrant's currency is the standard spondulic.

They're called "credits" in the game, but they're denoted with the $ sign.
All money in space becomes 'spacebucks' except for British pounds. They become 'space kilograms.'
