Why do the aliens never engage with me. I run into one, launch a torpedo and it runs away... every time. Any tips?

What's your pilot skill? And if you prefer torps, tactic skill?

You're probably running into Space Hives. Those things just fly past you like a comet, and they're pretty hard to catch. Now if you run into some real "out for blood" aliens, you wouldn't have the same trouble of them running away

That way if it retreat, it's still in fight with you. If your pilot and tactics skills are high enough, shooting a torp up their backside will typically damage enough of their engines to slow them down. If you have the forward lance upgrade, then advancing first turn is preferable. That's my two cents.
